Sad news - and it dovetails in with a couple of recent posts. He played with Georgie Fame's Blue Flames which helps to underpin BluesNik's Revox's points about Fame's role in opening minds in the early 1960s. "A Message To You Rudy", my favourite Specials' song, was written by Dandy Livingstone who I referred to on the Joe Boyd thread as having been in the UK singles' chart in the mid 1970s and it was originally recorded in 1967 by "Sugar and Dandy". Think RR was on that one too. Can't say that the 1976-1977 album on Blue Note was really the start of roots reggae as some have suggested but what it did show was his innovation and versatility. He was comfortable with jazz, ska and reggae. Lynval Golding today on Twitter: "It's with a heavy, heavy heart I share the news of the passing of my mentor and friend, a true legend, Rico Rodriguez. Rest well my friend."
