Yes, Lat I am sure she is. Here is an fascinating article which features her and the good Dr Lucy, this is from a blog punningly entitled MUSIC UNITES US.
Pauses for topical irony to take effect...

I think every member of Trio da Kali is a griot.
here they are from last years Celtic Connections.

    Couple of points...

    * more a note to myself, but anyone else who wants to have a bash, more than welcome - it would be good to compile a list of female griottes.
Just looking at the griot families of Mali for the time being. for example:

    Diabaté
    Sissoko
    Dagnon
    Tounkara
    Koité
    M'Bodji
    Kone

    Djessira Koné - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXXkEvKw1TU
    Sara M'Bodji https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sara_M'Bodji
    etc....

    * we are way way overdue some more recorded music from Toumani Diabate, yet I know of nothing upcoming. He is scheduled to do a short tour this year in France, and that's all I can find.

A lot there - to start I read all of the article yesterday and very interesting it was too.

Joe's back with the Wainwright/McGarrigle crew this fortnight; this time with Martha, perhaps the least well known of the family. I loved Martha's first CD and played it a lot when it came out and it was good to be reminded of a couple of the songs on there, and of the likeness to her Mother's voice. Some beautiful songs in the podcast. I wonder if Joe is going back to A again after the next edition...did I read into his closing comments that he might be about to start around again...I hope so. The enjoyment of these podcasts shows no sign of abating for me.

Not caught it yet, JC, it's on the list for today. I agree re MW's first CD though.
I think she got some anger out with at least one of the tracks.
          Fingers crossed for triple A.

Not breaking any confidences, Global, but Joe avoided that particular one.

I don't like to be negative, GT, but it is his chance to convince me. I bought the CD and didn't like the angry track. It cast a shadow across the rest of it for me although I loved "Factory" which is beautifully arranged. My memory is hazy on Martha and Glastonbury. I think she played there. I might recall a big music fan who was my manager at work saying he saw her and was disappointed. I saw her in a Womad tent. At the time, I was sitting next to someone who wasn't a world music fan. He was there out of interest and veered towards the other acts including her. He moaned all the way through it which didn't help but she wasn't all that wonderful on the day. As I say I am willing to reassess.

It's difficult with the Wainwrights - they make a career out of their family relationships, not all of which work. MW clearly driven with that particular one. There's a difference between being negative and being realistic & honest...

Zzzz - in which JB forces us to reconsider The Move.

Doesn't he know this is the wrong place on the forum to discuss The Move??

                    Oh go on then...

                    And he finished with:
"Taking a break, till the next time - I'm sure there will be a next time"

Book to finish on WM, and needs to find a new podcaster.

Here's a link to the contact page on Joe Boyd's website

I've dropped him a note to let him know he does have appreciative listener(s)...maybe more of the same might speed up his return??

Thanks GT. Yep! About time I did that...was listening to H yesterday...the Comedian Harmonists whom JB reckons to be the main rivals to the Swan Silvertones as the great harmony singing group of all time.

It's the only place to be Lat surely??

A good clip. I do also like the Four Freshmen and the Flamingos. There are others I don't know well enough - and I still feel that we could be told more about the links between that era of the harmony groups and later doo-wops etc.

Re that later period, I may have already posted this one, even fairly recently - I can't recall - but I found it interesting because I hadn't known about the beginnings of the great General Johnson. When I heard it, it explained a lot.

I've had a look through Joe's A-Z first time round and taken tracks that I could find on spotty and made a playlist. There are some gaps in there, for example the Tuvans and Mongolians among others but probably worth putting on shuffle if you want a listen. I will embark on AA-ZZ in the next few days.
