Well I didn't know about the Syd/Arthur/Burt link...that was interesting. Know what you mean re Floyd, but I still think 'Piper' was their greatest record and 'Scarecrow' a total joy, Lat. I think it was on the B side of 'See Emily Play'.

The Syd B stuff is better because it is idiosyncratic. But, you know, I had the privilege of seeing Arthur Lee and Love on the night Rick James died. He and the band were a mess, especially him as he was badly affected by the news, but it was still awesome in a most peculiar way. That is to say he was every bit as legendary in the flesh as one hoped but you could only just about hear the music in it. It gave it an odd and mysterious sound and one had to fill in all the gaps in one's head. I am keen on Bacharach and was so pleased when Noel Gallagher made favourable comments so as to to take him out of the non-cool silo a bit. Costello too. I like Jimmy Webb even more. Not sure about the video though:

I am so pleased you like it.

On about the fifth hearing today - and I am very familiar with the whole album - I reckon it has bits of folk, flamenco, blues, psychedelia, classical music, rock - and it predates indie - the lyrics are as out there as Dylan when he was truly out there - and quality middle of the road - and that voice is pure soul when you listen to it - it is the stuff of genius.

I really like it when soul enters into the rock genre because it is unexpected and it gives it passion. I have always seen this as a thread which invites a bit of loose navigation and the same is true of this end of the evening. So if you will forgive me, it is "that" clip again as I think it is very special and I am now very much looking forward to Joe Boyd on "J":
