    Sergio Mendes dies aged 83

When I first heard pianist and bandleader Sergio Mendes and his Brazil 66 at school it was considered decidedly uncool to like his samba fused rhythms, but I always recall secretly loving his take on the Beatles' 'Fool on the Hill' among others. Sergio's death has been announced after a battle with long covid. He had some great tunes. Here's that Beatles' take.

John, how refreshing. Lovely performance of its time.

I don't talk about it round these parts, but I have an old CD of Edmundo Ros which has been overheard calypsoing about not long ago.

'Mas que nada' remains his calling card for me and to my ears still sounds as fresh as the day I first heard it on Jack Jackson's record show in the early sixties. Terrific stuff Sergio.
(Odd fact: It was also used by Shure on a test record for the V15111 as a sibilance test of tracking ability)

I had that test record in the early 70s when I invested in a Shure V15-111 to complement my Thorens TD-125/SME 3009 turntable. I'm ashamed to admit that record was the first time I heard 'Mas Que Nada' but loved it. Since then I too associate it totally with Sergio Mendes. Thank you for the music Sr. Mendes.

I am quite emotional about this. So many beautiful songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXZpFOq0JOc&t=1s

Sergio Mendes never uncool. Those early Brasil 66 with Lani Hall vocals were brilliant - my 2CD (Very Best of …) compilation, a very generous 48 tracks is still a ‘go to’ listen. Thank you for the music Sergio RIP.

Not just a CD, Padraig, I've got an LP of Edmundo which gets a fairly regular airing. 'Hollywood Cha-cha-cha' - I always loved his voice on the TV - such a lovely soft accent. I love this track -
              'Moulin Rouge Cha Cha Cha'

OK John - this is for you - Edmundo singing one of the favourites of my time - though I never owned the 78.

Just noticed the presence of Wagner and Mendelssohn at the wedding, uncouth youth that I was.
