I was shocked to hear this; I had no idea that he had been ill. I have a number of his recordings and will find one to play in his memory this evening. I only saw him once, near the beginning of his international career when he played at the sadly-missed Cornerhouse in Manchester (pre-2006 as I went with my previous partner); I later tried to catch him at the howard Asembly Rooms in Leeds but it sold out quickly (small venue). His tour with Kaylan Kalhor was cancelled at short notice but I have the CD of the intended session.
So sad to hear this news. Toumani was a true musical hero, a giant of African music. After 'Kulanjani' was released I was at a party and met a guy who encouraged me to buy 'New Ancient Strings' with Ballake Sissoko. I never met that guy again but have often wished I could thank him for the recommendation. One of my favourite records.
Obituary by Lucy Duran in the latest edition of Songlines is worth reading. Knowledgable without being pedantic, she writes with great humility, appreciation and understanding.

Lucy is on Music Planet this evening with KT giving a tribute to Toumani. Programme is on after the opera show, at 21.30.
KT’s show was excellent - good reminder of the significant and beneficial influence of Ms. Dorian but, overwhelmingly, the realisation that the world has lost a massive talent.
ps glad Lucy stopped the overdub & the Indian influence information was fascinating.
