Rough Guide to Central Asia
FYI my world music show on the Cat entitled 'A World Seen from Nantwich' is now 7-8pm on Saturdays. I've decided to base the material on the Rough Guide series featuring a different CD each week. This week it was the turn of Central Asia and I had a great time. It's a quality CD.

How do you generally find your role at that station? Do you have to put up a fight to include quality music rather than the standard pop output? And what about audience feedback - is there much, ie people tuning in specifically for your show? Also, are you required to be at the roadshow events and, if so, how do you find them? -
Hi Lat! I have a good boss at the Cat. When he gave me the Saturday night slot he said I could do what I liked with it. There was a proviso in that it was requested that I do an all-classical show on Sundays. Both I was happy to agree to. The present situation at the Cat is a bit 'different' in that it's an online only station. If we were broadcasting on FM say I doubt I would have the same freedoms. There would have to be so much 70s, so much 80s, so much 90s etc. The key element is that I seem to have proved that I can do my job competantly and so I am a trusted member of the team. I did have one bit of feedback on my world music show and that was positive. As I broadcast I monitor emails coming in. I've talked to the other guys and they just get the odd bit of feedback same as me. I have done one roadshow and I'll say it was interesting but doesn't suit my style. However I've been encouraged to give it another try.Comment

Interesting. There is a very, very, small, new, station here - a three miles radius - and I sort of half-considered it. I'm not sure that I would carry it off confidence-wise as my confidence is on a range of too much to absolutely minus zero, depending on the situation. It is that kind of personality unfortunately.
I'm not unsociable but I'm better being with people who have similar interests. I have a feeling that I would be "the" leftfield presenter and I'd be asking myself who I would be addressing. I like saying "hey, listen to this, it is really good" to people who I think might have some interest but when it comes to completely converting others, I am a bit of a dead loss.
I admire what you are doing there, particularly as it gives you so much enjoyment.Comment

I would think that your biggest issue Lat would be trying to cram all your musical interest into a restricted time space. However, given the interesting things that you write in these spaces and the passion you have in music, perhaps you could get round it by having a fairly scripted approach, which might help you raise your confidence. Sometimes when feeling that you lack a bit confidence being prepared can help get round it....until you get the gist of it that is.Comment

Yes that was kind and thoughtful John as ever. I find the approach which works best for me is semi-scripted. Have a one or two bullet points upon which to hang your presentation.Comment
