Roger McGuinn said that when they showed him their version, Dylan's reaction was "Wow, man, you can dance to that". According to Robert Shelton, "...instrumentally, McGuinn was the only Byrd on the recording. The others couldn't make the session, so the famous bass introduction was by Larry Knechtel...."

Outside of the hits, I'm not sure their music really connected with British audiences.

Edit: By which I mean, I don't think they connected with the British audience in the way that I imagine they did with American audiences.

I used to work with a Byrds fanatic.

You're too young to know, ts! What is interesting and the sound for which they were famous - the jangly guitar sound was through McGuinn hearing George Harrison. Whilst the Byrds relied very heavily on Dylan's songs early on I guess they influenced him when he went electric and John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline show this. Ah but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now.
I can't kid myself - listening to Radio Cornwall this morning they featured 1966 - the top five included Kinks Sunny Aternoon, Mamas and Papas Monday Monday with Beatles Paperback Writer at no1. Was it really 49 years ago? Yes!

Great hits early on and of course v influential on later generations in particular indie rock in the 80s. And a fascinating story - Gene Clark kicked out for refusing to fly, when he was arguably the most original writer in the band. And those tunes.....at their best, sublime. IMHO YMMV etc,

I was introduced to the Byrds by a schoolmate, and have been a fan since "Tambourine Man". Fifty years ago - frightening thought. That's half a century.
