Je t'aime - Petula's story of French Chanson

What crackin' Friday evening entertainment. Petula was a good guide and what a wonderful array of old French performers they rolled out and there was plenty fabulous old film. Well worth a watch, I thought.

I'm glad you started this thread, jc - I was going to this week but never got around to it.

This prog is securely recorded to the hard drive and will get a watch with a glass of red at a suitable moment. Glad you enjoyed it. I have a distinct weakness for this sort of song, and there's a playlist in the motor for use at strategic moments south of the Channel

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

UKIP eat your hearts out! If I wasn't convinced about "over there" I am now. I don't want to be "unresigned" from Francois Hardy! Still less Anna Karina...

        Great programme.

One of my favourite French chanteuses was Miss Stan Getz.

Incidentally, I always thought Anna Karina was some Russian novel...

Very true, BR - Juliette Greco is sensational no matter the age, I found myself thinking. Think I might take the BBC4 invitation and see how many I can get on the playlister. Barbara's 'aigle noir' was stunningly tragic - I'd never heard her or it before as far as I'm aware.

But so were George and Charles.

I've used Playlister a few times in the last year or so but in general have found it a bit frustrating. There always seems to be a fair few tracks missing/unavailable. I may have uncovered a reason. Yesterday I thought I'd try to create a playlist from Friday's 'Chanson Francais' programme but playlister shut me out because I'd forgotten my password...well, that is, it wasn't what I thought it was. So I thought I'd take the time and try to manually transfer the data into Spotify but even my rusty rudimentary Franglais realised that what the BBC4 playlist said was played was often something slightly different.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, if you use Spotify and want to listen, here's a playlist from Friday.

The entire program is now up on Youtube for ease of le watch again. Fascinating how Jane Birkin now looks like a senior university librarian. She can sort my shelves anytime.

I'm glad you said that, I was thinking she now bears a spooky resemblance to present-day Una Stubbs - both to look at and listen to. Partly the fault of those glasses!

Does anyone remember the Private Eye spoof of Je t'aime at the time? - it was on one of those floppy 45's that they sometimes gave away. One particularly hilarious exchange which I probably shouldn't repeat on a family forum.
