Well, yes, you identify there one of my contenders for best female vocalist of the last decade. There is real time in her voice - it evokes a past that you can't quite locate yet somehow is full of clarity while sounding wholly modern at the same time.
That's my entry for pseud's corner done this week. I will go back into my shell now.

I've been listening to Eliza Carthy's latest - 'Neptune'.
There are a couple of stand out tracks, but I found the majority to be a little homogenous. I must admit to being less than impressed with The Gift too at first, which then became better through familiarity but I'm not sure about this one. I'm open to the 'cross over' style - so it's not a folk purist issue. And there's plenty of energy, ideas, drive and excellent musicianship. Just hasn't hit the mark...
Some other views would be interesting
And I should maybe try a 'compare and contrast' on Eliza and Marry W.
PS I was genuinely concerned to hear that Norma's illness was septicaemia - very nasty and I do hope she recovers fully.

Does anyone have any news on Norma? I haven't heard anything recently.
On Eliza, I am still dipping in and out of the albums you mention. However, I did see her perform "Dreams of Breathing Underwater" live. It was definitely a different direction for her and I wasn't sure whether I would like it. The performance was terrific though and with a great band. The songs suited her personality so well.
The time before I saw her with the Imagined Village and the time before that it was probably around the time of "Red". While "Red" was good, I feel that she has improved immensely as a live artist and it seems to me that her voice generally is also more spot on now.
I sensed some uncertainty with it earlier on, even when she was being nominated for awards, but then she had quite a lot to live up to. There is absolutely no question about that these days.

Paul Sherratt
And right now* on the Give The Drummer Some Radio stream via wfmu, Doug is playing a Mike Waterson tribute in spite
of some horrible technical problems with the streaming.
