As part of the lead up to the live performance of the late Martyn Bennett's wonderful record 'Grit' at Celtic Connections, BBC2 Scotland showed a 30 minute documentary in the Artworks Scotland strand from 2005. I hadn't seen it before. I thought it absolutely excellent, and also quite sad for the loss of great talent. Not just Martyn, but also terrific film with the irreplaceable Michael Marra and the recently passed diva of the Scottish Travelling People, Sheila Stewart. Even if you don't love 'Grit' I think you'll find this worth a watch.
The programme on Thursday evening was followed by a recording of the concert with a huge ensemble on the stage of the Concert Hall in Glasgow that opened this year's Celtic Connections. Probably my wee TV isnae up to it but the thing for me that worked least was the voices - that was what was missing. There were bits which I loved - 'The Wedding' for example; and the players played with enthusiasm throughout, but the mix of the voices wasn't there for me. You can have a look on Beeb2Scotty introduced by Mary Ann
...and in case you had forgotten this great bit of Danny MacAskill on the Cuillins Ridge to the wonderful 'Blackbird' from 'Grit', here it is.
Don't try this at home!
