What a pointless exercise - What a strange 50 to choose from - if they're going to do these things just let listeners text or email their own choices - no list needed! There seems to be more glaring omissions than good covers included.

      I don't think it's entirely "pointless"
Some "cover" versions (as previously discussed here and on other threads) are wonderful

      Webern's Musical Offering
      or
      Cash plays Depeche Mode

      and so on

        quite right Cloughie.

FAR more worth in a thread like this where you might actually stumble on something that you didn't know previously.or some merseybeat turned Goth nightmare..!!

Sorry GG I must have missed the Webern on the Radio 2 prescribed list!

I would also have prescribed Liszt!

I assume R2 have a bank holiday to fill, cloughie... and I assume they took it down to 50 because that's all the Beeb algorithms could handle... and let's not have a free for all for goodness sake. Even looking at the 50 from an R2 playlist point-of-view there's some glaring omissions, as you say. I would have thought something like Al Green doing 'How can you mend a broken heart' would have been a shoo-in, but there you go; he made it so much his song they maybe didn't know it was a cover.

Anyway, just to say that Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer got me to re-listen to 'Redemption Song' like it was new again.
Eines der besten Songs, die die beiden zusammen gemacht haben! Das Original ist zwar von Bob Marley, aber dieses Cover geht einfach unter die Haut! :)Anhören...

Having seen the list of DJs making the choices the list is less surprising. The omissions that immediately come to mind are Animals - House of the Rising Sun, Don't let me be misunderstood and Bring it on home to me, Rolling Stones - Not Fade Away, Little red rooster, Beach Boys - Barbara Ann, Do you wanna dance, Then I kissed her, I can hear music. One of the most notable covers is a cover of her ownsong- Carole King's Will you love me tomorrow which she originally wrote for The Shirelles and recorded herself on Tapestry. Roberta Flack's cover is equally good.

this Late Junction regular (blame Fiona) is guaranteed to be missing:
Music Video from the album 'Melody Mountain' released in 2006Susanna Wallumrød - vocalsMorten Qvenild - keyboardsProduced by DeathhprodDirector/Camera/Edit: ...

as is Cat Power who did a whole album...

and not forgetting this Jimmy Scott class classic

we have a playlist over on Spotify with a mere 314 irregular covers (it's a work in progress) ...

you could do a " best Dylan covers top 50" very easily.

                  Gongers would like that.

                  I like this, rather oddly.

I'm pretty sure Bob didn't write that one, southernsainty!
Is that her off the radio singing on that? Must've been a while back.

Talking of Bob I like this take on 'As I went out one morning':

yup, that really is her off the telly/radio6 whatever.

What i do, JC, is I sometimes talk about diferent things on the same post.
                        Seamless.

anyway, Bob would have been proud to have penned a Eurovision winner, I feel sure.

Did it win? Who knows? Who cares?

i think this board needs a country rock thread.

                            nice.

What about this. Not a cover, so off topic..
                            But bloody great anyway.
