Here we are then on the one Womad stage that is a hundred and something miles from Malmesbury. I really did think that I would be back there this year. Regrettably, after months of being on the receipt of torture and hence chucked into turmoil, my emotional health wasn't and isn't up to it.

So I'm sticking to the writing and luckily enough we have the radio. MAK and Lopa are on tonight with selections so far from Mahala Rai Banda, Abigail Washburn and Alpha Blondy. All pretty good. Nothing has staggered. Iarla O'Lionard is on at present with a very lovely song and I think we've got AfroCubism soon. So sad to have missed seeing them.

It has been pretty quiet round here lately. If Paul's wife is no longer poorly, we might have some thoughts early in the week from him, as I know that he was intending to be there.

....Yes, AfroCubism are doing everything one would hope. Next, the magnificent Jarabi. (The best thing to emerge from Lucy's dining room some fifteen years on - though a trifle over-speedy, this rendition. A very minor gripe for me!)

.......Faiz Ali Faiz - This too sounds excellent. Qawwali live almost knocks me to the ground. Well, Rizwan-Muazzam did. Something about the vibrations!

I don't know if you have had an opportunity to hear Qawwali live but it should definitely be on those lists of 100 things people should do in their lifetimes - Lat.

........Day 2 - Noting twitter style! - Enjoying the fado singer, Ana Moura. I think I like her better than Mariza. A slightly warmer sound perhaps? Dub Colossus were pretty good. Would like to have heard "Tizita Dub" though. Axel Krygier - Fun but not too sure. Probably better not just heard. Did Kimura and Ono get in a bit of "American Beauty" there? Quite like it - very slightly brings to mind Takashi Hirayasu.

(Have always liked Andrew's Womad presentation. Can't see why he can't be given the occasional World on 3 or Late Junction.)

Those women from Siberia with their Jews harps and their wonderful sounds on Sunday evening's show seemed like something that must have been magnificent to see and hear - I look forward to seeing a film or photo of them. I'm sure that Feufollett were good live but I found them a bit lifeless......I'm struggling to listen through the programme cos all I want to do is go back and listen to the Siberians again - they're near the start, by the way, after a fine Ebo Taylor tune.

Thanks Paul - I hadn't caught their name and the playlist isn't up yet. I liked the comment that Lucy said some fairly toothless old guy had come up to her and said, 'How come they've got such great teeth - look at mine - I've been playing Jew's Harp for years - they must have a different type of Jew's Harp.'

There's a really fine triple bill about 37 mins in from Norway (Waltz in Black), Palestinian oudd (Trio Gibran?) and from Niger. Good to hear Dissidenten who Andy told a good story about when he met them in the Siberian World Routes programme a couple of weeks back which involved a bar in Peru I seem to recall. I'm really enjoying this programme and I haven't got to Mr Taylor yet.

That Hari Sivansen is one very fine musician indeed - as I said elsewhere I really enjoyed Prom 17 and some individual pieces I've heard on the Womad programmes - I wasn't sure about his colab with Omar Puente - thought it might be a bridge too far apart, but I really warmed to it - and some fabulous percussion; and that Omar seems like a right character - most enjoyable!

Listening to Wo3 from Friday - that Iarla Ó Lionáird is one mighty fine singer. Lovely to hear Mary Ann entranced by him - she loves the Gaelic, doesn't she?

Iarla Ó Lionáird is on my digital turntable quite a lot - probably even better if I understood Gaelic...on the other hand, that's what I like about people singing in foreign languages - the voice becomes an instrument.
