Nice wee show on Saturday morning and I mean wee as for some incomprehensible reason Mary Ann was restricted to a wee sma' hour for Wo3. Still there was a neat leftover from the Commonwealth Games stuff with a recording in Jamaica on Rastafari Bobo Shanti Nyabinghi Church - always good to hear a spot of Nyabinghi drumming...and Mary Ann did find a bit of time to remember Jean Redpath with this absolute beauty.
My favorite song from The Celtic Lullaby CD. Got this album as a kid, but didn't really listen to it till recently. Jean Redpath has such a beautiful and ...

Fabulous guest, Aziza Brahim the Saharawi singer...what a terrific voice - wonderful performer. Actually a great show with more from the rather excellent Djessou Mory Kante and a couple of tracks reflecting on the recent campaigns in Scotland. It also had a great bit of percussion courtesy of Hossam Ramzy towards the end. Most enjoyable

I listened to his opening effort, 'Monday Morning', this morning and it seemed to sum up the dreich that was today, but the rest was rather dull though he did ask for that fine Townes track...also Mary Ann played 'Offering Chant' - stops me in my tracks every time, today no exception.

MAK on the iPlayer - with that new facility it's possible to click over & omit tracks much more efficiently - so Ewan McLennan was editted out the show; perfectly fine musician, simply didn't strike a chord with me - the rest of the show was fine & dandy though.

Mary Ann Kennedy presents new music and a live session with Scottish singer Ewan McLennan.

Yep, Global, an excellent addition to the LA facility - I can see it'll get a fair amount of use Nickxt week.
...and great that you get 4 weeks now!

I seem to remember rembetika singer doing a very good session on either Wo3 or Cerys, and she really has a terrific voice quite apparent in her WOMAD set from the summer which arrived at our lugs via MAK's Friday show.
Mary Ann Kennedy introduces previously unbroadcast highlights from Womad 2014.

Among some fine tunes played that evening by Mary Ann is 'That's Enough' by Richard Thompson and his Family which should be churned out regularly over the next four or five months ever time a politician comes within speaker distance.

Srdjan Beronja's 'Morning Mantra' was pretty good too, I thought...and that Andy Cutting in Leveret - yes, nice show.

Oilrig was also introducing a Celtic Connections highlights package on Beeb2Scotty last night...needless to say not all good but a fine tune from Vent du Nord, as they did on last Friday's Wo3; a great tune by Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel ( I'm going to check out a bit more of him); and a very excellent piece by the California Feetwarmers (they looked like a gas).

Quite an extraordinary show from MAK on Friday featuring the the Golden Lyre of Ure and a remarkable performance from Stef Conner combining to produce something original and moving.

Hello! Haven't been in here in a while. Mea culpa. But yes, what an extraordinary experience. Turns out I had crossed paths with this when it was still all a pipe-dream - at the Edinburgh Harp Festival about 12 years ago. Truly amazing looking instrument and Stef Conner is some bird! (That's a compliment btw.)

If you enjoy a bit of Tuvan throat singing, and who doesn't, have a listen to the rather spectacular Alash from Friday's Wo3 with Mary Ann - such wonderful sounds. Also great to hear the return of one Mr Kershaw for what might be a regular outing input to the show. I for one hope so!

Enjoyed Alash - not grabbed by that much else on the show to be brutally honest.

For example, I found AK's retro Stones stuff a bit incongruous - more suited to a R2 Stones retrospective than the only World Music show on r3.
I also wasn't that interested in how he got the OGWT gig
He was always difficult to shut up...

                            Air time is precious.

I've never been a fan of Capercaillie but over the years I got over that and realised that Karen Matheson is a very excellent singer away from the band. Last night she and Mary Ann were a very good combination like two very familiar neighbours having a great chat. Also Karen chose Flora McNeil's hauntingly beautiful 'Mo run geal og (My fair young love)' as her heritage track. And her own songs were a great listen. Most enjoyable.

Many thanks John for the recommendation.

As you know, I do like Capercaillie a lot and especially Karen Matheson who I rate extremely highly and always have done.

So I'm really looking forward to this one.

Incidentally, this is my favourite. If I had to take just 100 songs to a desert island - I couldn't manage with less - it's in there:
