So happy to hear you're all getting into the Commonwealth Connections! All researched and recorded by my Radio Scotland colleagues. I won't say that there isn't a sense of irony there (!) but they're doing a fabulous job and there's a genuine sense of excitement about the build-up to the games in Glasgow.

And if any of you fancy the trip... we're live at Southbank this Friday night with the exquisite Claudia Aurora in session and the venerable Andy Morgan with his world music milestones... I'm sure you guys would have some of them - spill the beans!

First waypoint for me was probably in '69 via a sale in a Birmingham W H Smith shop. That's when I acquired an Adamo LP because the cover told me he was the Number One Singer on The Continent.
'Inch Allah' was a favourite track along with 'J'Aime' Also picked for that 50p outlay was Bob Downes ' Deep Down Heavy' and Jean-Luc Ponty's cool ' Sunday Walk '

Mary Anne has The Gloaming in session this Friday on Wo3...right up her street!
Mary Ann Kennedy with a session from The Gloaming and Part 12 of Commonwealth Connections.

...and we've got Malawi on Commonwealth Connections. I recall there used to be a Doctor from Malawi(Dr John something, I think?) at Wishaw Health Centre just out of Glasgow who used to send AK tapes that he played on the show...wonder if he'll get a mention.

Excessively excited at the prospect. May have to go roaming to calm doon.

This is a MECHANICAL recording, but it's the BEST you'll ever hear it. [UPDATE! It has a rival (companion would be a better description) played on a magnific...

That session was just so great. If we get a better one this year it will indeed be o especial. If you haven't heard The Gloaming go listen to this very excellent session.

...just so it doesn't confuse, the first half hour of the playlist was the results of the Songlines' Awards (some fine tunes in there too)

I completely agree - listened to it live & have it on iPlayer again now. When d'ye reckon Oilers will get them back on?

Next week wouldn't be too soon...

That piano player Thomas Bartlett is growing on me. Saoirse is a masterpiece of modern Irish traditional music. The poetry is integral to the piece. Words, music and individual performance combine like a good jazz quintet - say Billie Holiday, Lester Young and pals. Maybe you could roam over to Saoirse Sean ORiordain and click on The Gloaming agus Saoirse, and/or Poetry Daily for words in Irish and English, and a bit of enthusiastic journalism, if you feel inclined.
If you do, don't forget to click on the video at the end.

Very enthusiastic journalism indeed, Padraig. The thing about Bartlett is that the more I listen to the record and though they are all quite wonderful musicians, it is he and CaoimhĂn Ă“ Raghallaigh who give them a totally different sound to anything that I have heard before.

That's a great link Padraig, thank you.

World on 3 had the Eliza and Martin as guests and they did Mick Marra's Monkey Hair in the process - but Oilrig was ill, so Lopa was scratching the decks. There was a bit too much chat for my liking, especially given the commonwealth input, but there were some fine tunes. I really enjoyed the Malaysian section mind you, but I'll be kinda glad when the Commonwealth Games are finished.

In the meantime Mary Ann, hope you get well real soon.

Hadn't heard Mary Ann for ages. Got a bit too much of her at the beginning of the show as she talked for ages to the guest. Anyway she played some complete belters of tunes. A wonderful French piece by Henri Allibert, some wonderful old Papa Wemba, some Tenores Di Bitti, Blind Boys doing 'Run on for a long time' (boy I love that song).

They're trying to get us to trawl the archives to replace the commonwealth connections, so any suggestions for revisits are welcome. MAK kicked off with a couple of Cesaria Evora tracks from old sessions. I could go on. If the track she played by Mose Fan Fan is anything to go by I won't be missing next Friday. Fabulous track also by Welshman Chris Jones - great show though I wasn't bowled over by the guest.

thanks for the reminder JC - I'd also got out the habit of listening to the sole remaining World Music show on r3!
Mainly due to LK fatigue - so I missed both the Carthy session & the MAK one.
Luckily the Carthy session is available here (and I seemingly never tire of Monkey Hair...)

and MAK's show is still on iPlayer.

And Commonwealth Connections didn't really work...dreamed up by a producer then shoehorned to fit. Better to have given Dr Lucy (remember her?) a slot to do some Commonwealth musings. too late.

Wonder what the new controller will do about WM?

It was a great show - I think I was put off the guest because of the photo of her on the Wo3 page. Maybe I was being unfair
Mary Ann Kennedy presents new world music, plus a live session with folk singer Nancy Kerr

...on further viewing I think not!

I think I'll make a punt for them to repeat some of the Corsican and Sardinian stuff that Kershaw recorded all them years ago.
