Good summary Lat with which I concur - I'd have perhaps put more emphasis on the excellence of the Ara Djinkian Oud session - I totally agreed with his pholosophy for playing, his music was moving & I'll be listening to more of it.

    Thanks Oilrig.

I was sitting in a metaphorical basement last night and had ruled out any possibility of reception. I did though dig out the wireless at around midnight and found World, albeit on a very distant waveband. During the next hour, the reception became much clearer. That had everything to do with the strength of programme content. All the music in that hour was to my liking from a terrific start with Nuala Kennedy to the Lipovenian sounds during which there was noticeable suction between me and the speaker.

There are a number of sounds in music that I instantly recognise as "mine" and there were many in this programme. Difficult to describe, they aren't an elitist thing. Everyone has them. The kinds that it is hoped someone would have the gumption to play if one ever had the unfortunate experience of being in a coma. If Kennedy, N-Tet and the Dardanelles all contained that particular form of medicine, I was evidently still not completely tuned in for that wonderful track by Suzzy and Maggie Roach.

I spent all of it entranced and reminding myself how "Why the Long Face?" is one of the best CDs in my collection. It was therefore something of an earth shaker to hear that I had been listening to Anais Mitchell, of who I am a fan, and Jefferson Hamer. Well, there is something similar going on there. And there is more than something to Kathleen MacInnes, Mabon and Bellowhead who all make perfect sense in the real world. The Bellowhead song had the allure of whisky and without the downside of a morning after.

Rather like the Dardanelles, I am now becoming familiar with the work of Mabon and am enjoying that familiarity. I am also now won over by Sekouba Bambino who can sound tremendous even in respect of the bleak. Sidi Toure gets my vote on the grounds of sympathy with Mali and we will hear more from him on World Routes. Finally back to Juravca. Obviously I loved them. That mix of voices and complex, water slapping, clapping was a winner. If the rest of that CD is similar, I hope we will hear more of it soon.

            Message for Oilrig:

            Well alright, okay, you win.
            I'm in love with you.
            Well alright, okay, you win.
            Baby, one thing more:
If you're gonna be my man (??),
Sweet baby, take me by the hand.

Global, yes. And I'm vaguely reminded of what that Frank Sinatra would say if any of his chums were fretting about finding some company for the evening. " It's ok, Norma Deloris Egstrom is in town "

Especially enjoyed Genticorum and that track from Carlos Nunez - reminded me I had a tape somewhere with Pipe Major Robert Matheson playing 'Aires De Pontevedra' from an old record 'Gracenotes' - must try to dig it out - first time I heard the tune - rather wonderful! The song by Stan Rodgers was great too - a real seafarer song. Happy Christmas Oilrig - always makes you feel welcome, doesn't she?

Yes - and "Fonn" is a contender for my best CD of the year. I very much liked the earlier work I was introduced to on the forum but with its very beautiful ballads, excellent packaging and the inputs of Mr Boys, this is the one that has really done it for me.

I am currently considering about 300 CDs from 2012. It is too early to produce a Top 50 but the following are probably also going to be there - Ablaye Cissoko/Volker Goetze, Bobby Womack, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Calan, The Chieftains, Dexys, Dr John, Habib Koite/Eric Bibb, Jacob Garchik, Jimmy Cliff, J Shogren, Marry Waterson/Oliver Knight, M Ward, Paul Buchanan, Ren Harvieu, Sekouba Bambino, Sidi Toure, Tracey Thorn, The Unthanks, The Vaccines, Wilber Calver, Yasmin Levy, Yosvany Terry, Zoe Rahman.

What, no Karine? Mark Coles didn't pick her in his top twenty either!

Well you never know. She has made it through the preliminary round but then again so has Sam Lee.

Incidentally, I'm wading through the NME ones too. To sum them up in a phrase - "as if Joe Meek had invented shoegazing".

Happy birthday to me and all glory to Sam Lee and Karine P for the two finest albums of the year. It's always a lovely thing to know that you can be lost in admiration!

Not Anais Mitchell? Happy birthday. I am far too polite to ask whether this one ends in a 4 or a 5.
