      Beautiful.

      The Transatlantic Sessions were excellent.

I have seen Capercaillie live - in a tent in Finsbury Park!

Karen Matheson is the finest Scottish singer of all time.

Unless and until you can post similar to test that opinion.

Julie Fowlis from North Uist is pretty great, Lat.

This one was on a natural world programme on Alba.

Ah yes, I am aware of Julie Fowlis although I have never heard that very good song before. Her voice is more "roots". With not a drop of Scottish or Irish blood in me so far as I am aware, there is something about gaelic music that feels very central musically to me. It is soul music and I don't have to work on it. It feels integral and it always has done but then I guess that is what the universality of music does. It extends to Brittany and Galicia too. I suppose less prosaically, there is just a folk strand. RVW, Tickell, the Unthanks etc.

erm, some claim - Finest Scottish singer? Finest Scottish female singer?
Well, apart from Flora Macneil obviously, we'll start with Martyn's mum
Fhir a BhàtaOne of the best known Gaelic songs, composed in Lewis a long time ago, you will also hear a version in Irish Gaelic. Being sea-going people, th...

I skipped over the Karen Matheson bits after the first track - life is too short for too much of this kind of music, tends to be what MAK turns to at the slightest opportunity ever since she lost her Radio Scotland show, also a nice cheap solution for r3 WM budget, which I think is currently about £14.75.
            Can do better
...she did play some cracking tracks though - I didn't know about the Dublin Laptop Orchestra and Caoimhin O'Raghallaigh - this is how we fly and I v.much liked the Owiny Sigoma Band - atmospheric, although investigation of that album shows it to be a patchy affair.

              An intriguing post GT.

As they were on Jools, Global, I found myself feeling Bela is a wonderful banjo and she is a fine singer, but together they didn't work as a duo for me.

It's been far too long but Oilrigs most recent show will be this Friday. An event worth mentioning - two hours.
Mary Ann Kennedy with a session from Don Kipper, plus new releases from across the globe.

How grand to hear her back on the waves. Some nice wee tunes including that excellent song Capernaum by Kris Drever and a nice wee bit of Frank Stokes, and Selim Sesler, the heritage track of the most enjoyable guests, Don Kipper with their terrific singer Yiani Melisis. And Mary Ann seemed to be enjoying herself in the middle of it all

Yes - a well presented programme.

I am increasingly enjoying the Baaba Maal album and the Hamish Napier track was very good. I like this a lot too:

Got caught out in last night's show. I hadn't heard the early recording career of Fela and assumed the track Mary Ann played was Caribbean. 'Highlife Time'...top tune. MAK...breath of fresh air.

Yes, a big welcome back to Oilrig - hopefully they'll give her a run of shows....
I heard 2 duff tracks in the whole show - anyone want to guess?
Enjoyable session and a v warm, relaxed and interesting interview with the rather jazzy Alya Marquardt.

                            Wo3 is the new Wo3.

OK, Global, I'm going to plump for the Moura track as in the past you've never been the greatest Fadofanatic. And I'm going to go for the end track which, while not wanting to offend anyone, just seemed out of place (and more boring than I remembered though I've ended up with it as my whistleworm for the new week.)

50% right JC, 50% - so we agree about last track, the other was the Welsh Mabon boyos which seemed utterly predictable and simplistic in its riffingness.
Made the Fado sound great !!

But I don't want to emphasise the negative - this was overall a great show, the duff tracks were the veritable grit in the oyster that eventually make the pearl (hmm - that doesn't quite work, but you know what I mean?)
