Phew glad it wasn't just me... And not forgetting Natacha, Graham Parker (need to check that album out, hope it's on Spotify, hope Dervish are too). Kicked off with a great Femi Kuti track too.

In fact I may have to Listen Again...

Personally not so keen on the Parker track but is it just me getting a sense that Femi is emerging from the shadow of his father - great track.

Mary Ann's got the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc to hang around with on tonight's show - wonder if it's live.

Mary Ann's up in Shetland again tonight with a button accordionist for World on 3 - and I think she's back there for Sunday's World Routes too.

Listening to Wo3 last night I was left with this sadness that Radio Scotland binned Oilrig's Global Gathering programme in place of chocolate box classical confection and a bunch of guys who are not fit to tie her bootlaces - and I say guys because there are no women on evening Radio Scotland. Some might feel her shows more folk oriented but the whole thing feels so easy. Excellent young guests, Paddy Callaghan trio, playing fine tunes recorded in Shetland - terrific intro from 'Orchestra Balam e Compagnia di Canto Trallalero Galata'. A brilliant live piece about an hour and twenty in from Genticorum that's not on the playlist; beauty of a double from 'Aidan O'Rourke' followed by Estonian 'Maarja Nuut' - and loads more to enjoy. Great show, I thought.

Finally (and loyally) caught up with Oilrig's show.

This 'folk orientated' view - if it dominated every show & all shows there may be cause for comment; but it doesn't ( I haven't done the anorak analysis to be honest). I enjoyed the show & even though monopolised by (probably) hairy fiddlers she diluted this cleverly. More power to their fiddling elbow ...

And you're right about Global Gathering - there's a dire NI version....

That folky feel was in there again this week for MAK's Wo3 - among some crackin' tunes like the Arnold Chiwalala Band I'd like to cast some attention on two tunes in particular. Isle of Man's Barrule playing 'Irree Ny Greiney' and Shetland's Fullsceilidh Spelemannslag with the track 'Cavers' - the wonder of these for me was the beautiful pace of the music, the flow of it - match this against the bluster of Skerryvore - they just don't do it for me - maybe you need a few pints in you first. I gave it a go but had to fast forward eventually. But there was plenty to fast forward to - Qetiq and the haunting Rim Banna to name but two. Fine show - with the obvious exception.

I had to listen to Oilrig in two sections this week - I became completely captivated by Teddy Thompson's version of Kate McGarrigle's 'Saratoga Summer Song' and eventually had to go looking for it to listen to again. I see what Mary Ann was saying but I felt a lot more comfortable with Teddy's voice than I ever do with Kate's son Rufus.
But I'm glad I came back for a second shot at the show to enjoy in particular Tigana Santana and then Jyotsna Srikanth.

Although Rufus was quite good on Private Passions, not singing but talking
Michael Berkeley's guest is Canadian-American singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright.

But then I do love the melodrama of that Kurt Weill track - we saw a fine version by this chanteuse in a reconstructed Kit-Kat club in Berlin not so long ago.

not the usual fare for this thread I admit - -maybe Oilrig could do a folk cover?

Congrats to MAK on a gold-star programme last night.

Some powerful female voices - but I guess that's probably her strong point.

Bronze star from me - mainly due to not being a huge fan of Cocos Lovers, proficient musicians though they were I found them a little bit too predictable.
I prefer it when Oilrig springs more surprises - loved Simo Lagnawi, Messele Asmamaw and Tigaw Bellete, juries out till next week on Sam Amidon; when we'll be in the throes of BBC4's World Music jamboree.

Indeed - not too keen on Man's Ruin but enjoyed the homage to World Routes.

Clearly we must cherish & foster this last refuge for World Music on r3.

Must remember not to call it tokenism.

Moving pibrochs on the show (esp Barnaby Brown)
& we've got Natacha Atlas in session next week.

I really liked the guests this week...and the South Sudanese singers and xylophones sounded a gas.
