Have begun GT but am having technical problems in that I can't keep Google on the same page as Spotify and in fact it takes about six transactions to move from one to the other. This is a VERY big problem when I am trying to identify what, for example, the Swahili word is for Saturn. However, I am working on it. The technicalities and the language issue!

Have you managed to get any messages in your message box, Lat? I just sent a link to a Radio Ulster SirVan top 70 as chosen by the Rad Ul listeners - 69 actually cos I couldn't find one of the tracks. Anyway I've left the playlist open if anybody wants to add any Van favourites that are missing...or particular versions, or tracks featuring Van...you know the kind of thing. Anyway, here's the sort of link:

I am getting the deliveries on the right side of the page. If there are words from you and GT with them, I haven't located those. I can, therefore, get into the actual lists you are sending, ie Born To Sing, and play those. I was also able to sign up to the collaborative list on space and start adding to it. The "70"....yes, just done it and I will add my favourites.

.......You have done a grand job there. They must have made a lot more available because of his birthday, I have added 16 to take it up to 85. Nearly every one has been special along with very many of the 69. That is, as in really special. The one I wanted to add but couldn't find on Spotify was Van with the Chieftains' "Shenandoah" on "Best of......Vol 3".

I am ecstatic about that "Cyprus Avenue" concert. To be able to perform as he did at 70 is extraordinary. But then all the true greats know exactly what they need to do within their capabilities as they age. It was very un-showy, I thought, and no doubt a lot of hard work had gone into enabling it all to sound so effortless. And that made it really wonderful.

Some tracks I've added have a spiritual or a religious hue. I am more the former than the latter. Van's music has always connected in that way. I know that's true for many people.

That was certainly apparent listening to the Radio Ulster countdowns, Lat - people talking about songs that had provided particular solace or inspiration along the way, some of the messages very moving I have to say. That voice reaches parts others just don't. And I think you're right about them adding LPs on to spotty. Certainly the amazing 'Too Late to Stop Now' with the Caledonia Soul Orchestra is there now - always loved 'Caravan' from that record - wish I still had it...got lost along the road, or maybe slipped into a lay-by. Here they all are at the Rainbow with that string section - remember seeing it on the TV. Dynamite then, dynamite now!!!

My chum and I were sitting in a pub in Dingle on a wet and miserable February night about 15 years ago, the place more or less deserted. It had been a tricky day for a variety of reasons - not all connected with the lovely area we were in, although the day out at sea captained by Bert from Liverpool had not been as productive as we all hoped, and Bert had complained in his gentle way about being awoke from hibernation to take the boat out for little result. Other problems of various sorts hung heavy in the air - a few glasses of the black promised false hope. Suddenly I was sitting on my own - people were ordering at the bar, occupied elsewhere. Out of the ether came that very track - I never even knew he had recorded a version, a deeply moving few minutes. Difficult to even explain why, except, as you say the spiritual nature of Van's interpretation, and yet, and yet, the lyrics are pretty straight forward, so how does that all work? Sometimes it is best not to over analyse.. Anyway I felt everything would work out, and it kind of did. Away, you rolling river.

                    Note to Host:

I have added a few and even discovered that mwezi means the moon.

Co-ordination vis a vis the machinery is slowly improving but true inspiration needs some working into again.

                    We'll get there.

A workman like list next, featuring the application of broken bottle to string. I suspect there will be a strong US influence...

I doubt this one's on spotty but you can do wonders with a teaspoon - I mean as well as stirring your tea.

Interestingly a fairly strong sub-continent representation too, Global.

Yes, it's great how that has developed. I'm enjoying it; always forget about Bela Fleck....
