Lovely day in West Yorkshire today (after a rather grey and wet early morning...) The countryside looked beautiful

Accordions, mellodeons, concertinas and all that
I was reading Accordion Crimes by the wonderful Annie Proulx over the summer, a series of short stories bound together by an accordion that starts life in Sicily before going to New Orleans, Texas and beyond. I suppose that when I was a kid I assumed it was a Scottish instrument and of course nothing could be further from the truth. It, and its relations turn up in all types of music and cultures. So I thought I'd start a collab playlist on Spotty and welcome all contributions as we celebrate the accordion family. Just follow the link!

...and in the process this rather excellent companion site.

Here's a rather interesting and enjoyable taster from our old correspondent of these threads, Mr Lateralthinking, giving us a concertina/mbira combination not on Spotty but it's an example of the wealth of enjoyment to be found on our acc/con/mel playlist.
The full critically acclaimed album from Chartwell Dutiro and Mike Parnell is now available on bandcamp:https://mbirakorositina.bandcamp.com/releasesA truely...
...and here's a reminder of the playlist for anyone who fancies a visit or might even enjoy contributing.

Dropped out of Spotify when I bought a new computer and it all got much too complicated. I'm still on the old XP Cape Canaveral rather than the Windows 8 but will sort out that situation quickly somehow. Attaching a mouse might help.
This seems as good a thread as any to post a few clips. No one could fault the promotion around Mbongwana Star. As for the content, I'm not too sure about it. I do like the summer dust that rises in it but it is very much in Gilles Peterson territory. Note the direct reference to Todd Terry's "Bango". That is not a bad thing in the slightest but it proves the point.
Always welcome intelligent football songs, especially those conveying elements of wistfulness. Like the Harry Harris track and he is well-meaning but vocally he is more a male Tracy Chapman than anything of greater emotional substance or roots.
Always keep an eye on the Daptone site as one of the few places on earth with a commitment to true soul and with the promotion of artists who are in the here and now. However, they do seem to be going very poppy. Saun and Starr's links to Sharon Jones are to be applauded and I really don't mind them at all. But.......they seem to typify the lighter direction.
The last recordings of Pops Staples......of the four this one is the best - but there could never have been any doubt.

I like The Soil and this one in particular. Not a Beat box kind of guy but I make an exception for this.

Agree wholeheartedly about Mbongwana Star - don't quite get there though I want them to.

I also like Slow Train Coming, Saved and the fact that I am attempting to type this on Windows 8.
A very small screen and I have no idea where to find the volume control but it is a start.
A few more:
Michael Chapman - Savage Amusement (Secret Recordings SECCD115) - Reissue of 1976 album, recorded by Stax producer Don Nix. Toughened-up band versions of originals and well-chosen covers make for an exciting roots-rock record. Bonus tracks, 16-page booklet. The Secret of the Locks - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJ9GnTGwcr4 (6 out of 10)
Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse on ABC Radio performing a song in the Noongar language about the indigenous men who fought in WWI despite official prohibition. Noongar is only spoken now by a very small number of people. Williams and Ghouse have other songs on You Tube. Minny OK - http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/...lliams/6419022 (7 out of 10)
Tom Russell's frontier musical "The Rose of Roscrae": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zLha1neU8k// http://www.theguardian.com/music/201...roscrae-review (8.5 out of 10)
