Definitely, John. This is one of my favourites of yours - Matthew Herbert and "The Truncated Life of a Modern Industrialised Chicken". I would like to see it beating X-factor to be this year's Christmas no 1 - Poultry Against The Machine.

We're vaguely following the times and tribulations of Spotify on this thread I think (amongst the other arcane off-topics)

      Well
Spotify has first breakthrough in the US

If they carry on like this, our playlists will be safe...

I think they'll be bought out in the long/medium term, so there will then be changes. I'd like to see the shuffle function improved (it seems to frequently cycle round the same few tracks - they need a new algorithm..although there is no such thing as 'random' in the world of computers [just thought i'd slip that in], and also a 'number of times played' counter that I could select on (a la iTunes). And the multiple update problem fixed too.

Oh yes, and when a bunch of people put a series of great playlists together they should be compensated for their effort or does the existence of the playlist itself justify our labour of love?

Now back to The Chain. After worringy slightly that my fave from that legendary bleakster Nico might sent Lat spiralling further into despair, he responded brightly and positively with an apt Neko Case track. Bravo. Check out Jocelyn Pook mashing it up...

That Nico track was terrific. I hadn't heard it before. So ahead of its time.

Got through a lot of the draining and rather contentious paperwork. There will be some frantic footwork going on from the powers that be or possibly not. Who knows?

3.25 for the visit to the Fearsome Alienating Zomboids from Hell in Nazi Gulag House. If I was on Twitter, I would go live from there to diminish the effect of the humanity vacuum. As it is, I shall do it alone. I've been practicing the scowl, the spitting and the grunting to match their welcome. That's on the basis that it will be one of the women. If its a bloke, I've underdone it and will need the caveman suit.

.........Newsflash 4.18 - Not so bad after all this week. They appear to have mutated into just appallingly horrid.

They're obviously wary of you down there Lat - you may have mastered the scowl better than you thought. That was a fine 1000th tune on the chain - I make it 'The Man Comes Around', and they don't come much better than that.
I worried somewhat that I might get into difficulty with our resident southern Big Smoke Expert for going from Sham's Cockney tunes to Joe Brown's Jellied Eels - thought I might have got something wrong - I know that Cockneys like to eat Apples and Pears and go to Barnet Fair and listen to Mick Jagger, but I wasn't sure about the Eels - I did consider Someone Pinched me Winkles by Rolf but was worried that PS might 'ave 'n 'ernia.

I have similar worries when I post the odd Scotch tune

Btw the sequence got a bit screwed up due to the usual synchronising issue, but I think we've got away with it...how long do you think this piece of string will be? I've discovered a lot from it - so a big thanks to all contributors. Just need McG to join in...:cool2:

John, Global - Oh no. This sounds like the end game. Seriously, I thought the original objective was 2000. John - You shouldn't encourage me. When it comes to London, there's really no stopping . Not office London. The London of my roots if never my own neighbourhoods - as close geographically to cockney as people can be without being born within the sound of bow bells.

Jellied eels, oh yes, and from the market stalls bought with a nice bottle of sarsparilla. Washes them down nicely though my Nan when alive would have a guinness as she used a pin to produce an edible whelk. Did you see I got lots of colour into it - fish, cats, electricity, zombies, gazebos etc? A typical inner London scene with all its life and colour. - Lat

(Incidentally, The Man Comes Around. Excellent. And, well, you know I went right off Squeeze when they blasted out Charlton Park two years ago so you couldn't hear anything else. But that Chris Difford track, just discovered, and from 2010 - Chris, all is forgiven).

                    2000 is fine by me...or even 2011

Or we can carry on until 2020.

Thanks for the explanations there Lat - I didn't know where the sasparillo fitted in. My link to Sasparillo was a TV programme when I was a kid called the Tenderfoot (I think), and the guy always walked into tough saloons and asked for a sasparillo - so I thought it was an American kinda thing - still don't know what it tastes like - could you add it to mushy peas?

Hey there's nothing better after a moderately tough day earning a crust than hitting random play on The Chain and getting Skal Klubb playing The Red-headed Swede.
                        More musical saws I say!

                        (thanks to whoever posted it)

There has been much posting on the topics of peas(mushy), and yet one of the most significant facts about this vegetable has been omitted.

That is to say, we have expended hot air (of the electronic variety) but failed to mention the hot air.

This effect is well known throughout the world.

There is indeed a historic couplet on this topic, and there has been much debate as to the attribution.

                          Was it Peethoven? Shakespea? Well,neither..

I'm glad to be able to share with you some recent findings which prove the antiquity of this legendary couplet.

At this time of year in Pompeii the sun is low in the sky and recently, despite the millions of visitors to that benighted place, for the very first time as the dying rays of the sun glanced off the dusty grey wall behind the vomitorium a tourist noticed some scratchings.

Once carefully cleansed they were interpreted as a Latin form of the couplet which read...

                          'peas peas musica fructa
                          magis comedetis quo magis bombulum'

As you'll no doubt instantly realise this is without doubt an ancient form of the couplet:

                          'peas, peas, the musical fruit,
the more you eat, the more you toot.'

                          So, there you have it.

It's not just this forum who are fascinated by this delightful form of the vegetable.

next installment - the search for the next 2 lines...

Toot right Global! get's the pulses racing.

I thought that the reason for soaking them was to reduce the effects of the Southern wind - but also, the advantage of mushying said peas would appear to be that you don't have to consume them with honey, as I have tended to do all my life; this would certainly prevent them from tasting funny, and would negate the requirement to keep them from rolling of the Canif.
However the mushy pea ( is there a singular?) still seems to retain a certain comedic value - well seen why they have engendered interest, even before these days of the interweb.

A little further down the same wall, after a bit of careful scraping emerged the following...

'magis cibum magis sentias habeamus cibum omni peas'

                              roughly translated as..

'the more you eat, the better you feel,
let's have peas for every meal'

That must be the Latin version of the Spanish, 'A diario una pea es cosa sana' - 'A pea a day keeps the doctor away' - roughagely speaking, that is Global.
