I think Lat should have the honour of first post...I'm sure it will have a concentrated flavour

      Seconded.

The musicians are waiting, ready to strike up a toon once they know what Lat is going to choose....

yay! a pleasure to read you lateralthinking1! a good choice too!

if you'd left it much longer i was contemplating posting an order (no less) demanding your return. you left it long nuff..... but it's nevertheless lovely to read you.

one problem is that the chaps featured in gt's typically intriguing illustration don't have the instruments usually recommended to sound 'a bit' like nusrat............. they're obviously much more versatile musicians than they may first appear however!

i hope your return isn't just a halloween treat btw

ps think i'll pass on the soup, (thanks, but it looks a bit grim).

Thank you for your kind words handsomefortune. Yesterday's soup of the day was pumpkin. I still seem to be here.

My latest for the list are 'Birima' by Youssou N'Dour - there has never been a better lilt to convey a sense of togetherness - and 'Shumba' by Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited which somehow has an emotional resonance beyond the scope of words.

              Birima - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yhj3itB2194

              Shumba - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kb3wSLLzwZE

Talking of 'Shumba', here is a link to a recent BBC World Service programme, 'Outlook', which features Samy Ben Redjeb and his mission to track down Africa’s lost 1970s music. Scroll forward to the last ten or so minutes for that part of the programme:

Yes, and yes. I still remember seeing them in Lichfield Cathedral - they were also surprisingly amusing which didn't detract from the intensity of the performance.

I would have loved to have seen them live, particularly in that setting. I think the list is looking good today.

A mixed bunch from me this time around.

First, Ilham Al Madfai - 'Baghdad' for its mystery. Regrettably, the following video clip doesn't do it many favours but I am including it for anyone who doesn't have Spotify and would like to hear it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnfIf4Kd3mc.

Next, Ruben Gonzalez who is one of my favourite pianists of all time. I also very much liked his character. There isn't anything I have heard by him that I don't like and by rights his name should be on the list. However, 'Pueblo Nuevo' is my first choice and it goes under the Buena Vista Social Club label. It is therefore included irrespective of qualms about going for the obvious. Again, the clip doesn't enhance it but at least it doesn't do anything to detract from it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMExC9AaoD0.

Much the same goes for this clip of the Four Brothers. I could have chosen any song from 'Makorokoto' but I have opted for 'Uchandifunga'. Of all the tracks, it is one of the most infectious - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=453EF...feature=fvwrel.

Finally, Yasmin Levy with the extraordinarily sensual 'Una Noche Mas'. There is more going on in this clip than the other three. Probably for viewing after the threshold, although it is never less than tasteful - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnYan4E3FTM.

My ninth selection. Apparently we are sailing from a desert island.

                        Taraf de Haidouks - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnNCidccbG8

The tenth is one that has a lot of production. I do though love this song and can't contemplate its exclusion.

The vocal performance is also quite extraordinary.

                        Cheb Mami - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhjYaeotTYY

Ahmed Khelifati Mohamed : Some of the events weren't wonderful but please take that remarkable voice to Womad soon!

I would also like to include Guo Yue. We need someone from China. I can't think of a more deserving person.

Have to say that this one stopped my wife in her tracks, Lat...and that takes some doing - wonderful song.

                              Obviously Lat, a fine choice

I was going to say whatever happened to http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/worldmus...ing_ding.shtml
But then checked & she has a new album out; seems to have dropped orf the r3 presenters radar though doesn't she?

By the way if anyone ever finds out what the impassioned lyrics to Baaba Maal's Allah Addu mean then please do share. Unless its a shopping list in which case please don't.

I'd be surprised though because he typically sings of solidarity between nations & love and understanding between individuals.

And yes, tracks have gone - that'll be the PP

And what of Rachid Taha? Should we succumb to the obvious classique?

John - I am pleased your wife enjoyed it. One perhaps to accompany future art exhibitions?

GT, I think there is certainly a case for rocking el casbah. There is also a case for bringing back the singers who have disappeared from the list. I listened to all of them - Violeta Parra, Lydia Mendoza, Maria Teresa de Noronha etc - and may well ultimately select some of them. I am now including these as my selections 13-16 for the Spotify list, and shown here for any wider interest:

                                Mercedes Sosa - "Gracias a La Vida" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIrGQD84F1g
Leo Ferre - "Avec Le Temps" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiXcUTTLud4
                                Ismael Lo - "Jammu Africa" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2GMC_iYrbA
                                Bhundu Boys - "Kachembere" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29fNYFNdg1U

Like Cheb Mami, for whom sadly I always feel a need to provide a disclaimer, Sa Ding Ding is Marmite isn't she? When I saw her live, it was a wonderful spectacle and "exciting" to be near the stage. As legs were stretched out at 90 degrees, her acrobatic dancers appeared increasingly likely to lose all coordination. I had visions of an unfortunate soul carouselling through the air, straight into a nearby ambulance. Perhaps my earlier memories of being pogoed from Brixton Academy into the St John were still raw.

As for the music, electronic pulsing isn't for everyone and, of course, her voice only just stood up. Still, she was being blasted from elsewhere by Squeeze, the only time I have ever been annoyed with them. I still think she has something. There is some charm. I keep trying to convince myself she is closer to Bjork than Gaga. But there is that less than comfortable feeling of "the industry"!
