The latest in the DIY series of playlists is a joint combination between myself and PS.

Well, throughout the year at charmingly random intervals I find items in my inbox from PS - quite often they lead me down new trails...sometimes they don't.
But they are always welcome.

So I've taken some of them and embroidered them into this particular playlist, known to its friends as ....

A prize to anyone (apart from PS obviously) who spots who contributed which...I'm fairly safe in offering that I suspect.. That link in the previous sentence is there for handsomefortune, another attempt to entice (not just HF, but anyone) down the slippery slope of Spot.



for those who read my earlier post you can perhaps guess that I'm between engagements at the moment. I'm torn between hoping that it lasts until Xmas or that summat interesting turns up . It usually does.............eventually.

Well done. I put on mine a track by Cheb Mami - it is so unutterably beautiful. Then I made the classic mistake of reading his biography and was totally appalled. If you don't know it, I don't recommend it.

So it is difficult to know what to do then. Can I separate him out from him the artist? Can I put it down to the society he lived in?

I went through this once before with one of Africa's biggest stars of the late 80s. He has clearly been airbrushed out although being up there with Keita and Maal. I can't even recall his name as I write. It is a pity.

On balance I still pick Phil Spector's songs because I just see him as being crackers along with being a genius. And, of course, we revel in prisoners' songs from the past and in remote places.

So all very difficult.

....Just to return to this, I was of course thinking of Papa Wemba. How the mighty fall.

I've been listening to a fair few African recordings recently. Lists rather than radio. Spotify and various websites.

Think that the late Sipho Gumede was very good.

Aziz Sahmaoui and University of Gnawa will definitely feature in the critics' end of year lists, for what those lists are worth. I generally find them interesting.

The gruffish tones of Seni Tejuoso stand out but I can't work out the era from the 2011 release.

Somewhere on an old AK tape which I may find one day (or it's maybe bust) is a track by Mzwakhe which was one of the great spine tinglers for me, Lat ( I think MM was in the nick at the time) - wish I knew what it was - I was always a bit useless at writing stuff down ( tape player in the car days - safety first) - another regret. Maybe I'll find it one day.

Btw I believe you're getting more than your share of weather up there at the moment? So far round here snow on the top of the hills only on Mon which has now gone to be replaced by Hail n Sleet. Who, I seem to recall were a reggae band from Whishaw?

I wasn't even close.

The record that 'Please Enid' comes from has some very fine tunes on it - I heard PE on the Son of Peel on 6 last week.

I'll take your advice Lat - a complete belter of a track. I'd also like to draw attention to that magnificent Zion Train song - really drives along. I hadn't thought of Etta James singing Mojo Working but it really works - great sounding band. And I find there is little left to be said about the wonderful Mulatu Astake.

Thanks for these comments JC. I very much enjoyed the Doris Allen song - by rights every soul singer should be called Doris - and the Black Uhuru dub - among many others. Dub must surely remain the best ever musical encapsulation of driving through cities at night. It is so organic and atmospheric it could be another form of the weather or perhaps something astronomical.
