Audacity - there is a great big record button. sounds like you've found it. Then it records whatever the sound channel is on your PC. that might just be the external mike, picking up you talking. It records in stereo which is why there are 2 channels (those wiggly sound line things).

The volume may be set high, or the sound channel on your PC may not be recording what you think which is why you are getting the distortion.

You need to be able to plug as much as possible into your pc.:cool2:

Like your mike, your minidisc (tricky as I recall - mine went out of the window when I realised stuff was trapped on there forever).

You can convert cassette tapes to mp3 - either yourself or there are people out there who do things like that. Do you really need those cassette things?

If you've got ipod songs, they exist in digital format, so try playing them in itunes with Audacity recording and see what you get, do the same with Spotty.

Vinyl - I've got a Vinyl player with a USB lead, that lets me turn vinyl into mp3 (using guess what - Audacity). Have you such a device?

If you can't plug things into your PC, then the alternative is to put your mike next to the speaker, but this results in pretty poor quality sounds....

The general approach is to get as many of the songs into a high-quality mp3 (or similar) format. Then you record your dulcets also as mp3's. then create a playlist in itunes of all these things in the right order and burn them to CD (without any gaps) - et voila.

And once you've done it, we can all enjoy it

Audacity is a free software, cross-platform digital audio editor and recording application. It is available for most computers.

Right ho Paul - try turning your input meter down - I suspect it has defaulted to Max.


on the picture above it's the microphone.

' Line in' shows where the sound is coming from - is there anything there or is it blank?

that's fine - have you got a little speaker icon in the bottom right of your screen? I'd be interested to know some of those settings (playback and record)...

try different settings - might get rid of the distort...

The levels seem ok but the sound still sounds echoish, distorted ( rec'd from wfmu live stream )

then it's off to the Control Panel (or something like it) for you.
Then click on Hardware & Sound (or something like it), then onto Sound and find the Playback/Recording settings there. And if you don't have that, then we've found your problem. You're not using a computer it's a ...


Oh yes, and you didn't tell me what you're playing it back through - does it normally sound like this...?

I did say 'or something like it'. Is this a windows pc or a Mac or summat else?
If it's old Msft then they change the Control Panel wordage to fox the poor old users with every release...it's the word 'sound' and/or the speaker icon you need.

I like all this stuff, and I've also got keener on WFMU's for reasons I may explain at some point. Or not.
Ages since I've been to Crewe Hall, but have some quite pleasant memories of that place - we had a room with a turret and a view...enjoy yourselves...
