ok, so the first thing to do when you have decent bandwidth is have a look at Audacity. It is free.
Once you have installed it you can play songs & talk via the mike on your PC and it will record it on to your hard drive. Pretty easy to edit too if you make mistakes. I created a show for my DJ chum using this, and it was fine, took a while, but hey, such is live, er life.

Then you can save it in the format wfmu want, and either whack it onto a CD as a data file, or use some kind of legal file sharing software like http://www.box.net/features or http://www.dropbox.com.

The quality of the sound is configurable in Audacity to an extent, but, of course, if it is a low quality mp3 to start with...

...talking of which, if you want a wee treat, this evening on Mastermind a woman's specialist subject was on the radio shows of John Shuttleworth - the questions were just epic - I'd have loved to have heard John himself asking the questions but Humphrys did mighty fine. It's the last section before the general knowledge just before halfway and after a guy answering questions about Burnley FC.

Thanks Lat - I had a listen to 'the Gate' and enjoyed it - I particularly enjoyed the Taiko drumming. I had a go at taiko once about 4 years ago and left feeling that if I was a few years younger and a few miles closer to a centre of population I would have taken it up - a real energising experience.

Following on from the award winning Radio Texas project, I decided to set the spotty transmitter to Radio Mexico for one night. I find it slightly more commercial than our usual fare but it has its moments.

It is actually owned by a consortium of nuclear physicists, a couple of young hip-hop djs, an Oxford historian and two executives from Hannah Barbara. There's also three women from Cheam who were once stalwarts at Greenham Common and who are now trading in spiritual gem stones. Hence its rather eclectic sound.

Incidentally, you can also get it on digital radio where it resonates between the ruby and emerald ionesphere on Channel 13. The breezes over St Mary's in the Scilly Isles occasionally affect the reception though. There is a pirate golf ship currently sailing twenty miles from Albania that is using a periscopical oscillator. I should imagine that was how Mr Drolinger crept in.

My favourite track on "The Gate" is Esashe Oiwake. I think it is fantastic. He is a tremendous drummer and flautist but what a voice too.

I have probably mentioned before that the very first time I went to Womad, I thought it would be my kind of festival. However, a day of sitting for hours in a tent and traipsing round rather aimlessly with the people I went with, I was all ready to leave. I took myself for one last walk across the site before anyone had surfaced.

And there, rehearsing on the stage, was Joji Hirota and it completely stopped me in my tracks. I was staggered and captivated by it. I stayed for the performance in the afternoon and then the rest of the festival. After that, I just wanted to keep going back.

John - Yes, thanks. It looks like there have been more records or some repackaging of earlier ones. It was always difficult getting his cds even when the Tower Records shop in London was open. It looks as if there is another one too, from 2011, on Spotify so there is some good new listening there. - Lat.

I have Audacity but also no idea how to use the thing ( when I say no idea, I really mean NO idea ! ) I tried it today and the 'results' sounded as if they were emerging from a submarine - only worse.
What I'd like to do if this project is at all feasible is to mix my minimal paroles with the maximum of really stimulating tunes which ideally
will be sourced from my LPs, cds, cassettes, Ipod collection and ( sssshhhhh ) some spotty little items. Actually lots of spotty little items.
I have a mixer ( which is now a bit rough sounding at times ) a good mike, a couple of minidisc players, a couple of turntables and two cd players.
Time constraints ( which have been massive of late ) would mean recording 'shows' in short sections at a time and then joining the bits together with glue.
And then uploading the finished item to wfmu.
