The (possibly not always) World Music Exchange

The backstory: A few of us used to exchange links & likes via Spotify.
Due to recent technological improvements, this is no longer possible.

As an experiment we're going to try and do the same on this thread.

It would be great if you, dear reader, did the same.

A link or more to almost anywhere (legal of course) of almost anything that falls into that mysterious bailiwick of 'World Music' would be most welcome.

I'll try this one for starters, Global. It's a drinking song I like from Inner Mongolia on the Riverboat 25th anniversary record, 'Music from the Source'.

It's difficult to take an old well loved song & make you listen to it anew. I think these boys manage it though...

I was listening to Rad Scotty tonight - 'Another Country' - and heard a wonderful version of Gordon Lightfoot's 'If you could read my mind' - it sounded like Neil Young but ancient - seems Neily's been doing a record with Jack White using old Soundways recording systems and if the rest of the record is anything like this track it'll be something pretty great - anyway, here's the hulking one doing a live version of Lightfoot, not quite as good as I heard tonight but still a great cover.
Something a little different with Neil doing a cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind".

Paul Jones reminded me of this really fine version of 'That's no way to get along' by the very excellent Guy Davis... a fine bluesman.

...of course it always has me running back to the Wilkins' version from Newport, I think.

Here's that terrific lo-fi version of 'If You Could Read My Mind' by NY from his new record of covers, complete with plenty scratches.

                      The Promise of Gold?

She was very much liked by Charlie G....and this track was sent to me by Paul S.

Thanks for the Carthy/Marra track JC. Spotify crashes whenever I try to reply. There's quite a lot to say about it, clearly not via Spotify. First of all we need to find a version that everyone can listen too... That'll be youtoob I guess.

Well I got the 'Runaway' which I will never tire of till I shuffle off, Global. Sorry you're having spotty issues - interestingly I got some new sound system which worked when I installed but then stopped recognising Spotty - I assumed it was the wireless system - I'm now suspecting Spotty may have something to do with it.

For some strange reason there seems to be a loada Brazilian stuff around right now - here's Karol Conka, courtesy of nice Mr Coles 150th Shed.

Ah well, perhaps not so bizarrely the only place I can find Monkey Hair is on the almost defunct MySpace

Monkey Hair by Michael Marra: Listen to songs by Michael Marra on Myspace, a place where people come to connect, discover, and share.

For those too busy to waste a click, read this as you would a poem:

Monkey hair has turned to fair

and skirts the brow of passion's furrow

                              This she cries,

"Let no man lies move through my womb

                              and add to my sorrow

God of plunder, God of ill

Sent my love to distant hill

All to raise his drooping shares

Encasing my heart in monkey hairs."

Times are my mind takes flight

Cloudy by day and fiery by night

Master of heartbreak the sting in your tail

Is over and wasted, it's fruitless and frail

                              Flags are waving, banners fly

Truth is marching, here am I

Wounded and lonely but stronger and clear

No coward to flinch nor traitor to fear

This monkey hair that turned to fair

And skirts the brow of passion's furrow

                              This she cries,

"Let no mans lies move through my womb

                              and add to my sorrow

God of plunder, God of ill

Sent my love to distant hill

All to raise His drooping shares

Encasing my heart in monkey hairs"
