Thanks, Petrushka. Elgar himself made reduced and abridged versions of several of his works in the early days of recording, when the full-length, fully-scored versions weren't a technical or commercial possibility. Some of them are quite interesting to hear in their own right. I think a CD of them, along the lines of the Britten film music CD issued some years ago, would be a good idea.

Just wondering, will ticket holders, both day and season, get refunds for these three cancelled Proms?

Right decision to cancel ! The usual rowdiness would not have been appropriate and too late to have adifferent programme with the type of audience that turns up to something that isn't really about music

This over-reaction smacks of 'the trappings and the suits of woe' to me. Life goes on. The people who felt it would have been inappropriate were entitled to stay away and do something else. All it does is penalise the rest who were looking forward to it (I speak as someone who never bothers watching the LNOTP anyway). We're not a monolithic society and I'm sure the majority in this country are not particularly upset and are going about their lives as normal. I find it's always a good idea to limit one's media consumption like this, otherwise we tend to get caught up in the hysteria.

I don't have a problem with LNOTP being cancelled - there is much about it which wouldn't have sat comfortably with the circumstances, and unlike the audience the performers would not have had an option about staying away, regardless of their personal feelings.
However some of the other cancellations do strike me as OTT and puzzling to say the least. In my home county the county council has decided to cancel meetings for the entire period of mourning, and the district councils are largely following suit. Does rather beg the question as to how important those meetings were in the first place... In terms of events being cancelled some make sense - the Country Fair at Sandringham this weekend being one - but others do seem to be getting sucked in to the somewhat hysterical version of public mourning that appears to be the norm now. I am unconvinced that the Queen would have thought it necessary or desirable.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect performers to do their job, like anyone else. I don't suppose many people took the day off work because the Queen died. I think it's inappropriate to be too sombre at this time anyway. She was very frail and elderly and it could quite easily be seen as a celebration of her life and not disrespectful at all.
