Just listened on Sounds - great performance but a few more moments before the applause would have been nice - still what a performance!

But I was disappointed with his Berlin Beethoven series televised on Sky Arts earlier this year. It seemed limited compared with his Vienna recordings.
Just to underline that on here all views, just about, are contradicted, I'd like to say I think there is just no comparison between the Rattle/VPO Beethoven (good, but occasionally half-convincing) and the Rattle BPO Beethoven, which I have on CD, and which I would number among his best things (certainly with that orchestra). Best of all though is the 'Eroica' on DVD, in a church in Norway...

Still lacking the final ounce, though. Ah well...

I thought the Mahler quite excellent; for once I had no reservations. I liked the Birtwistle too. Did anyone else?

I prefer Harry when he's short. it's his longer works that exahust my patience.

Re Birtwistle I only just noticed the amusing typo in its title in the OP.

            (as you were)

              These Americanisms creep in everywhere!
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

(AND, AND, on September 11th he is going to conduct Elgar 2! Is that a first, I wonder...)
A recording of the Sept 11th concert is on Radio 3 tonight at 7.30 - looking forward to it!
