Cutting Petroc off mid-gush! But at least he knew not to keep talking...

Very kind of you, I should have known because the Slavonic dances must be the most frequent Proms encore with the possible exception of Candide..

Were there ten double basses? Sounds like.

That’s quite different. We are in our own homes, not disturbing anyone.

Yes, Alison, this was full-fat Brahms, not semi-skimmed. It was alert, full of sunshine and bursting with vitamin D. Summer holiday stuff by an Aussie Festival Orchestra with every member having a ‘busman’s’ holiday. I had some worried about chromium-plating but Mehta’s winning interpretation of the symphony’s finale gagged my niggles. Well, well, Zubin Mehta is enjoying his Indian Summer.

The encore was Dvorak’s very popular G minor Slavonic Dance.

The whole concert was quite an Event : quintessential Promming!

I greatly enjoyed this Prom on the radio and the interval comments. My mind went back to standing in the Arena for Mehta's first Prom (1974 with LA Phil.) Bruckner 8 in the second half on the composer's birthday 4 Sept. Prommers sang Happy Birthday Mr Bruckner.

But it is sharing good music!

I caught the Afternoon on 3 repeat of this concert , just in time, as it may have been cancelled later.

I enjoyed the Brahms, a very leisurely performance.

Re Bruno Walter, no, his Brahms 2 wasn't slow, around 38 minutes, and in his late recording (when his tempi in Mahler did get slow) only 39 minutes incuding the first-movement repeat.

There's a fascinating film of Walter rehearsing the first movement of Brahms 2 in Vancouver.

I heard only the Brahms and it was terrific, reminded me of Walter too.
