Prom 47: Aretha Franklin – Queen of Soul (22.08.22)

Prom 47: Aretha Franklin – Queen of Soul
    19:30 Monday 22 August 2022 ON TV
    Royal Albert Hall

    Sheléa
    Jules Buckley Orchestra
    Jules Buckley (conductor)

In her 80th-anniversary year – and 50 years since the release of her album Young, Gifted and Black – the Proms pays tribute to the ‘Queen of Soul’, Aretha Franklin. A singer, songwriter, pianist and one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, whose song ‘Respect’ became an anthem of the American Civil Rights Movement, Franklin is remembered in a unique Prom featuring a collection of her greatest hits with a dynamic orchestral backing.

Listening on Sounds - Chelea seems to have the voice to take on Aretha’s repertoire and the band and backing singers good. Could h@ve done without her intros however!

A great band and some lovely solos.

A vast improvement in every Respect than the 2019 Nina Simone tribute Prom.

Yes it was excellent -I also thought the arrangements were much better than in the recent Cynthia Erivo prom - good singer thought she was.

Sheléa certainly did justice to her idol -- no mean task esp. Amazing Grace, which was phenomenal. Quite a coup to get Joe Boyd for the interval chat with Skellers.
