The British brass band tradition is one of the marvels of the musical world. With an unbroken history stretching back nearly 150 years, the Tredegar Band is a true virtuoso ensemble, and from its base in Blaenau Gwent it found a worldwide audience in 2014 when it appeared in the Bafta-winning film Pride. The band’s second Prom this season celebrates the sheer breadth (and brilliance) of their artistry. ‘We’re aiming to cover the history of brass band music in about an hour!’ says Music Director Ian Porthouse, and this late-night showcase includes brass classics from Richard Strauss to Phillip Wilby as well as tributes – in their anniversary years – to Vaughan Williams, Elmer Bernstein and Judy Garland.

As a recent convert to brass band music, this programme looks most tempting.

      Yes! Me too. Recording it.

From what little I’ve heard, AMcG is doing a class job presenting live from the stage. Whatever irritation his subjection to the BAL format may cause, he’s a real pro.

I remember being at a late night prom that Penny Gore presented from the stage: consummate work
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Must first admit to total ignorance of the history and place of the brass band in UK society (wikipedia to the rescue at some point). With that said, this Prom is definitely one for the "good clean fun" category. Agree with Nick A. about Andrew McGregor being a very fine presenter this evening. It made for an interesting contrast in styles between AM and Ian Porthouse, at least from what I sensed, in that AM is long comfortable with speaking on the radio, but I wondered if IP was rather nervous. AM did his best to put IP at ease, it seemed to me. Nice also to hear that Ryan Bancroft was in the audience, to follow up on the band's performance with the BBC NOW yesterday.

What was the name of the movie about a band associated with a coal mine during the Thatcher years?

            Brassed Off

Featuring the actual Grimethorpe Colliery Band as its sort-of fictional equivalent, Grimley.

What took you so long as a music loving northern lad?

They supplied to brass sections of many orchestras for years eg HO, RLPO…

Not just a northern phenomenon some great bass players in Cornish bands eg Camborne!
