Proms at Battersea: Leif Ove Andsnes – Mozart Momentum 3 (8.08.22)

    13:00 Monday 8 August 2022
    Battersea Arts Centre

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Trio in B flat major
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Quartet in E flat major

    Leif Ove Andsnes (piano)
    Matthew Truscott (violin)
    Joel Hunter (viola)
    Frank-Michael Guthmann (cello)

The music of friends: for pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, performing with the musicians of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra is first and foremost about ‘partnership, a companionship’. Together, they’ve explored the music of Beethoven; now they turn to Mozart and in this lunchtime recital at Battersea Arts Centre they pare it down to basics – Andsnes, three MCO players and some of the loveliest chamber music ever created: the Piano Trio, K502, and the warm-hearted Piano Quartet, K493. This is music that Mozart conceived to be played at home, intimate without being inhibited, and playful without being flashy. Just inspiration, wit and melodies that speak straight to the heart.

Fine, fine 'PCM' concert from Leif Ove Andsnes and Mahler CO friends, from a listen on iPlayer. Thought that I'd heard one piano smudge from LOA at the start of K. 502, but very minor, especially given that this is his 3rd concert in less than 24 hours, as Petroc noted in his banter with LOA between the two works. As with the Mozart Momemtum # 2 Prom from yesterday, LOA, MT, JH and F-MG provided a generous encore, where you'll have to go to the start of Afternoon Concert today to hear it, as it spills 10+ minutes past 2 PM.

Good to hear also that Petroc seems to have recovered reasonably well and is back on form. Being 2 weeks behind on Proms, this is the first where I've heard Petroc as presenter, as opposed to RAH Proms from last week where he's in the box.
