The first of a good number Proms around the UK this year. It's a policy I fully support, though I wonder whether the rather exclusive programming of some of them may result in lower attendance, so I hope this will recognised when the season comes to be reviewed by the BBC's management.

I wonder what the first Messiaen piece for piano and string quartet is. Surely if it were from the Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps it would state so.

It's a very short, late work (1991). Possibly completed by Yvonne Loriod. Makropulos will know, for sure.

Thank you for the notice, E A. Normally I would be there in a flash, and I might be yet. I would love to hear that concert live.

I found this version of the piece - a dazzling flight by a Garden Warbler.

Heard this concert on BBC Sounds not too long after the live relay (a bit early for my day, that). Good, solid concert, with a definite 'novelty' in Xenakis' Allegro molto at the very start. Linton Stephens mentioned that Xenakis' daughter gave permission to the BBC for performance of the Allegro molto. Will let you all discover it for yourselves, except simply to say that if one has a certain preconception of Xenakis' music, the Allegro molto is nothing at all like that preconception.

No idea of the size of the audience, so this series will make for an interesting comparison with the past Cadogan Hall PCM's, which have traditionally pretty much sold out, or close to it.
