    Prom 38 (4.09.21) - Organ Recital

    11:45 Saturday 4 September 2021
    Royal Albert Hall

Meyerbeer, transcr. W. T. Best Le prophet: Coronation March
Bach: Fantasia & Fugue in C minor, BWV 537
Wider: Symphony No. 5 - Allegro vivace (1st movt)
Saint-Saenz: Fantaisie No. 1 in E flat major
Liszt: Fantasy & Fugue on ‘Ad nos, ad salutarem undam’

    Peter Holder, organ

Organist Peter Holder pays tribute to centenary composer Saint-Saëns in a programme that recreates elements of the composer’s legendary performances on the Royal Albert Hall organ in the opening season of 1871 and in 1880. His wide-ranging programme includes Liszt’s largest organ work, written for the ‘piano melodium’ (an organ–piano hybrid), and the opening movement from the most celebrated of French master Widor’s 10 symphonies for organ.

Good, solid 'Organ Prom' from earlier today, with Peter Holder holding forth well (didn't know until today that PH took over for Thomas Trotter). Admittedly, I'm not at all an aficionado of organ music, and thus am not the best judge of quality here. But it all sounded good at least to these ears.

It was very good, indeed - first-class playing, albeit on an instrument of which I'm not particularly fond.
