Prom 36 (2.09.21) - 20th-Century British Film Music
Yep - dull, dull, dull.
Film music lives because of the FILM images and rarely the music.
Why no RVW Sinfonia Antarctica?
Why was it dull? There were some varied scores on show and a good cross-section of British composers represented. Thank heavens we got to hear some Lutyens too.
The Sinfonia Antarctica is not film music per se but an adaptation of the music VW composed for the movie "Scott of the Antarctic", of which a newly-edited soundtrack was released on Dutton some years ago.

Of course it wasn't dull ! British Film music in the middle of 20 century could stand alone as classical suites ! If you want dull check some of the other proms of 2021,so called ' world/modernist music".

Is there a single 2021 Prom with such a dated title? I'll have to look again....
And that's the greatness of so many Proms this year - they defy easy classification....but you might, might just, have to hear them to understand that...
****
But there is indeed a Classic Tradition of British Film Music - Goldfinger, Lawrence of Arabia, The Third Man, Henry V....
Pleased that Martin Handley is presenting tonight even so. I like his quiet and well informed enthusiasm.
Agreed.
Great prom. The opposite of dull!

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
