What a marvellous CD! Its engineering is superb and its soundscape is a thing of great beauty. I was very critical of Edmund Finnis’s piece in the Prom claiming that it lacked individuality. I now understand his genre and am amazed by his ‘ear’ and by his ability to transform sound combinations in real time so that his music somteimes seens to take on a moving shape in space: I would liken that effect to it being the aural equivalent of a visual ‘mobile’.

I do worry that his transformations can morph into instantaneous snatches from other works. I suspect this is part of an organic process and not intentional quotation or plagiarism. At one monent, I heard a likeness to RVW Thomas Tallis Fantasia played in a rich acoustic, e.g.Winchester Cathedral, there were shades of ‘lonely’ Sibelius (Tapiola?), and something out of the Georgian composer, Kancheli.

What is undeniable is his rich talent, his scruple / discipline, and his individuality.

Many thanks for the ‘heads-up’, HighlandDougie: you have turned me from ‘Doubting Thomas’ to an enthusiast who will follow this young man’s development with considerable interest.

Agreed wholeheartedly. The first three minutes of Breakfast this morning confirmed this view, before I reached for the Off Button.
