Prom 8 (5.08.21) - Gražinytė-Tyla Conducts the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra

    19:30 Thursday 5 August 2021 ON TV
    Royal Albert Hall

Ruth Gipps: Symphony No. 2 in B major
Thomas Adès: The Exterminating Angel Symphony
    London première
Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 3 in F major

    City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
    Mirga Gražinytė‐Tyla conductor

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla champion the music of a too-long neglected composer. A pupil of Vaughan Williams, Ruth Gipps started her career as an oboist with what was then the City of Birmingham Orchestra in 1944, before becoming established as a composer. Her Symphony No. 2 takes a wide-screen, cinematic view of the Second World War, embracing exhilaration, anxiety and, finally, ecstatic rejoicing. Conflict of a very different kind runs through The Exterminating Angel Symphony by Thomas Adès (50 this year), inspired by Louis Buñuel’s Surrealist film.

Brahms’s Third Symphony strikes a more autumnal tone, inspired by a visit to the River Rhine in 1883. The critic Eduard Hanslick pronounced it ‘artistically the most nearly perfect’ of the composer’s symphonies to date.

I was less than impressed by Mirga Gražinytė‐Tyla at her pervious Proms outing (despite the BBC hype), but have since become aware of her considerable musical stature.

    But Brahms 3 "autumnal"?

I’ve seen that description of it before. I wouldn’t consider it outrageous. Any one word description of a major symphony is going to have its limitations.

I was thrilled by her Prom debut. Made Beethoven 5 sound as though I'd never heard it before.

I've decided to give this Prom a listen, feeling tired and a bit headachey (having helped look after my two little nieces all day) and thus not feeling like guitar practice...

No - I've made some edits before.

Thoughts on this Ades piece? First movement was ok but the second (just finished) pretty terrible I thought.

Thanks Joseph , just edited the entry : so Ruth joins the select band of B maj of symphonists on wiki. But couldn’t work out how to hyperlink her name to her entry or get the indentation on the second line right .

That’s so weird it wasn’t ten minutes ago - also it’s misnumbered as no. 3 - unless the Beeb has got it wrong ..
I’ve taken my entry out !

She does not show up via the Symphony No. 3 link associated with her name (yet?).

I might change it to 2 - in fact I have done having checked the number and key against the Chandos recording
