A recital by pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard

Realy good to have this 2008 Prom dug out of the archive to listen to in HD Sound for the first time. A well constructed and beautifully played recital.

I'm so glad that you've initiated a thread for this superb recital, Bryn.
I'd like to commend it to all our fellow boarders.
    I'll pick out two works:

    Messiaen: Catalogue d’oiseaux – No 8: L’alouette lulu
In the wrong hands, Messaien's Catalogue can sound akin to an ever repeating Twittering Machine. Aimard's interpretation showed the piece's strong structure and the clarity and variety of the bird's song was wonderfully projected.

    Bartók: Out of Doors Suite
This is, to use Florent Schmitt's title, Bartok's Suite sans esprit de suite for it can sound like an incoherent mash-up of Bartok's loves in the mid-1920s: his new wife, Stravinsky's use of the piano, Hungarian Folksong and Night Music. Aimard's fierce intelligence brought purpose, direction and incision to his interpretation and the result was a compelling performance.

    Wonderful, wonderful Pierre-Laurent Aimard!

Twittering Machine- Schuller or Balmadges (or somebody else)?
I once bought a Messiaen LP. The shop assistant, doubtless in an attempt at humour, said 'Ah, yes, Olivier - music to empty the house by'. Undeterred, I bought the record and listened to it.
      Just the once.
I recently purchased a box set called 'The Art of Murray Perahia', which includes an enjoyable all-Bartok CD that features 'Out of Doors'.

I guess most of us in moments of enthusiasm experienced the 'that looks interesting moment' and long regretted the wasted shelf space! One I remember was an LP of Takemitsu's music. There's a genre which has been swelled in recent years by minimalist music 'MMHH' - Makes my head hurt!
