However corny the text and however self-parodying the occasion might be, I was glad while teaching English in Germany that students were usually familiar with the phrase, Rule Britannia, it being a rare example of the use of the present subjunctive in English. Along with God Save the Queen, Bless you, and Rest in Peace.
