Perhaps the BBC should follow the example of certain sports teams and have a recording of a previous year's performance of the items in question - complete with rattles, party poppers, bursting balloons and out-of-time clapping. The bobbing up and down might prove trickier.
It’s certainly a story that crops up endlessly- didn’t something similar happen when Mark Elder expressed reservations around the time of the Gulf War? I wish it was a non-story but when the Prime Minister starts voicing his opinions it’s definitely a story.,.

Invite MPs to get together (a long way from anyone else in the RAH) to sing it. 3 line whip for ERG members (Bernard Jenkin is a choral singer).

... a Tory story, presumably. What are the chances that somebody will now try to remove 'Jerusalem' from the proceedings? I mean - 'was Jerusalem builded here?' - how arrogant is THAT?

However corny the text and however self-parodying the occasion might be, I was glad while teaching English in Germany that students were usually familiar with the phrase, Rule Britannia, it being a rare example of the use of the present subjunctive in English. Along with God Save the Queen, Bless you, and Rest in Peace.

A Guardian take on it here:

The rightwing culture warriors are at it again, this time manufacturing a controversy about Land of Hope and Glory, says writer Joel Golby

....perhaps some lyrical rewrites, shame to loose these stirring formulas...."Bor-is ever ever ever shall be a knave"....

We don’t seem to have any Prommers around anymore.

"So, to clarify: it was a complete non-story from the off." Yes.

(Though I feel bound to point out that it's 'which is the bigger threat', not 'which is the biggest threat': bigger of two. Hmmmmph.)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

The real scandal is that Lisa Batiashvili is playing but they have only given her the blasted Lark Ascending - what a waste ! They could scrap a couple of short pieces and hit her to play a proper concerto or brought in Tasmin Little to play the Coleridge-Taylor Concerto.

I'm sure the inclusion of the Lark will smooth the ruffled feathers of those people who have got into a flap about the temporary devocalization of Rule Britannia and Land Of Hope and Glory.

Maybe they should just have said that all songs will be played without vocals in empathy with all the choirs who have been unable to rehearse and perform in public for the last 5.5 months.
