KOKOROKO – music from West Africa re-invented for our times.
With their captivating mix of Afrobeat and jazz, this promises to be a memorable night at the BBC Proms. The eight members of KOKOROKO bring a contemporary social and political commentary to the West African Rhythms heard in the 1940s London's Soho area. As they say: “We wanted the music to sound rough, like going out and hearing music pushed through speakers or the energy of people dancing at afrobeat parties: its music we’ve seen work on dance floors.”

The names of Sheila Maurice-Grey and Cassie Kinoshi would have been enough to raise the interests of a number of our jazz community here. It's probably a bit late to publicise on the jass bored, but I will do so nonetheless.

Yes indeed, I only found out from the Jazz subreddit about 30 minutes ago. Will give it a listen tomorrow during another day of WFH.

Perhaps here another case of bsp listening to this Prom so that the rest of you don't have to . The KOKOROKO musicians are, of course, very technically accomplished. As for the music itself: well, it was "easy listening" for me, not in the "smooth jazz" sense (not at all, no fear of that), but simply in the "not difficult" category. None of the selections really grabbed me, to put in succinctly. OTOH, it must have felt amazingly awkward to play for an empty hall, where perhaps even more than usual, jazz really thrives on the musicians feeding off the energy of a live audience. Perhaps if people watched it on TV or video iPlayer, it had more impact.
