    Prom 15 (28.07.20) Chicago Symphony Orchestra/Haitink

Murray Perahia and Bernard Haitink have a musical rapport that has given us countless magnificent performances. This performance from the BBC Proms in 2008 saw Perahia return to the Proms, following a gap of 20 years, to perform one of Mozart's greatest piano concertos.

It was while writing his Fourth Symphony that Shostakovich was denounced in a newspaper article entitled ‘Muddle Instead of Music’. He continued composing the work in private, but it had to wait 25 years – beyond the death of Stalin – before it was first heard in public, in 1961.

Mozart: Piano Concerto No 24 in C minor, K491
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 4 in C minor

    Murray Perahia (piano)
    Chicago Symphony Orchestra
    Bernard Haitink (conductor)

(From BBC Proms 2008, 9 September)

I once had a book about music, written in the 1950s for young people, listing the symphonies of various composers. The Shostakovich list went as far as number 11, I think, but number 4 was listed as 'destroyed by the composer'. Fortunately it was incorrect.

This would be some way down my list of favourite Haitink Proms. Even so it’s good to have this on the wireless tonight and I feel in the mood for the Mozart in particular!

I was keenly anticipating this performance of my favourite piano concerto by my favourite pianist, and I was not disappointed. Murray Perahia's limpid elegance is exactly what this fine work calls for. Fine support from the Chicago players.

The symphony almost but not quite edge of seat stuff. Still think Bernard’s LPO account takes some beating, the overall mood lighter but the climaxes more devastating.

I was at this one, Alison, and much as I enjoyed it then, as I did again tonight, I'd agree that there are others ahead of it in the 'Best Haitink Prom' order. Right at the top of my list are the two Concertgebouw Proms from 1983 followed by the VPO Bruckner 7 last year then two other VPO Proms, the Bruckner 9 and the Strauss Alpensinfonie, the LSO Mahler 3 and so on.

I went to my first Haitink Prom in 1978 (LPO/Mahler 2) and there was never one amongst the many since that I regret attending.
