Closing the concert, Schubert's Symphony No. 9 in C major, D 944.

Caught this Afternoon Concert retrospective Prom yesterday. It was OK, if perhaps not the most inspired choice in various ways. On a purely technical level, it's a good, solid Prom, with the Haydn Mass in Bb as the fresher-sounding selection, if only because one doesn't get live Haydn Mass performances every day, with orchestra, chorus, soloists and conductor all in fine form. The Schubert had everything in place and went well, with traces of HIPP in the relatively brisk pacing. But comparison with the LCP / Norrington 1989 Prom with the Schubert D. 944 is to Norrington's advantage, in terms of gusto and, to use the term per the classic 1969 Western film, 'grit'. So for this particular 2006 Prom, not the most essential listening, and having heard it, maybe more understandable than usual about the lack of attention. But at least I can cross this one off the list for this summer's listening.
