But, hey - I may be wrong, and this might turn out to be a great piece . That's the joy of such prejudices - they're always being overturned by works with real invention and imagination.

Sadly this premiere-and-then-forget-it rule tends to apply to New Music generally.....the only exceptions seem to be those Orchestral etc commissions lucky enough to get taken on tour...

...or at least recorded. The Max Davies' 10th resounds splendidly on LSO Live, but did they complete the album with the 9th (whose RLPO Premiere was one of the last concerts I attended)...?

Did they heck.... it remains unrecorded.... (Like 7 and 8)...

(they put the Panufnik 10th on the album instead....bizarre decision....)

I was going to mention 'The Protecting Veil', which the BBC promoted as a commission, albeit not for First Night, but an article in The Gramophone suggests that a lot of work had been done on it beforehand.

THIS. New music is always a gamble. Of course there are duds that do not measure up. There have been in the past as well. Problem is that whether dud or gem, the piece has almost no chance to enter even the fringes of the canon nowadays.

              John McGuire: A Cappella (1995–97)*

              Séverine Ballon (cello)
              John Lely (CX5M)
              Newton Armstrong (audio)
              Beth Griffith (voice)

I shall be listening, drawn in by the wonderful lines that Karina Canellakis perennially spins.

The Proms is such a missed opportunity for new music. The cod liver oil approach has long outlived its sell-by date. The problem it faces is one of presentation more than anything, if audiences were given a narrative to help engage them then we might see better results. It doesn't take a lot of imagination: invite 5 or 6 composers to write short pieces on a specific theme or set text with limits on instrumentation and orchestra size. It wouldn't be a competition, rather a chance to illustrate different methods and approaches. We could even see a situation where audiences look forward to a new piece instead of patiently waiting for it to end.

Museums these days make much more of an effort to interest different people and it's about time concert halls did the same. I'm not talking about tacky gimmicks either but meaningful ways to appeal to open-minded audiences.

                    Anyway - IT'S HERE!
                    HERE WE GO!

The Dvorak itself, remember, is a substantial piece - getting on for the half-hour - You can look at the gruesome plot line if you want...
But...Let's give everything a good old Radio 3 fair hearing....

Time to put the celebrated Proms Penguin in its long-appointed place....(on the permanently-stopped, podium-like carriage clock...)

World cup in the bag, now for Summer, side 2.

A few weeks ago on my Dresden trip I saw Karina Canellakis conduct the Dresdner Philharmonie at Kulturpalast in a super programme:

                            Messiaen – Hymne au Saint-Sacrement
Shostakovich – Violin Concerto No. 1 (soloist: Christian Tetzlaff)
Stravinsky – Chant funèbre – Homage to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
Scriabin – The Poem of Ecstasy

Canellakis is a very fine condcuter who I will be following with great interest.

I don’t think it’s politically correct any more to refer to a woman as 'cuter', whatever her profession.
