    Prom 15: Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (1) - 30.07.19

    19:00 Tuesday 30 July 2019
    Royal Albert Hall

Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No 2 in D major
    Dmitry Shostakovich: Symphony No 5

    Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
    Yannick Nézet-Séguin conductor

One of Europe’s greatest orchestras, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, returns to the Proms under Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

In the first of two concerts (see also Prom 17) they pair two contrasting symphonies in a programme that moves from sunshine to bitterness. ‘This symphony is smiling throughout,’ wrote Berlioz of Beethoven’s Second Symphony – a work in which seemingly sunny moods conceal personal tragedy and loss.

Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony was written under the cloud of intense scrutiny and artistic repression following the public criticism of the composer at the hands of Stalin.

... though the earlier listings suggested the 10th symphony of Shostakovich was the one to be performed..

Jansons is on the sick list yet again and Yannick Nezet-Seguin has stepped in replacing the DSCH 10 with 5. The shortness of the programme was obviously for Jansons' benefit so a missed opportunity to include an overture.

The last time I played both those symphonies (Beethoven 2 and Shostakovich 5) in a prom concert at the RAH was 52 years ago, conducted by the superb, now woefully neglected James Loughran. Oh yes, I now remember, the concert also included Ravel's piano concerto in G and the first performance of 'Touchstone' by Tom Wilson.

I have seen Jansons conduct the Bavarian RSO a number of times both at Munich and Berlin. Of course Jansons has a history of heart problems. I have also seen Yannick Nezet-Seguin conduct a couple of times too who is a most exciting conductor. For what's worth of the two Nezet-Seguin would be my preferred choice. I can see the orchestra's performance benefiting from Nezet-Seguin's conducting.

We have earmarked this one as an attractive prospect despite short programme - probably promming. They might do an encore. Keen to see Yannick Nézet-Séguin. We recently sat next to a couple from Philadelphia at the Wigmore Hall. They went back to Ormandy in his prime and were very enthusiastic about Yannick NS.

I remember Touchstone - I thought it was rather good.

I've always had the highest regard for this orchestra, and will definitely be listening.

The Jansons/BRSO partnership has almost guaranteed excellent performances over the years so this is unwelcome news to say the least. He manages to combine attention to detail with an air of excitement that I have found quite rare in a concert hall over the years. On the bright side, Y N-S was very good with the Rotterdam Phil last year so I will hope for the best. He does appear to work an incredible amount though and he is one of those people who I hope isn't headed for burn-out in a few years, or settles into a comfortable middle-age banking large fees and phoning in indifferent performances, like Maazel or Mehta.

Oh dear, don’t think I’ve heard of Tom Wilson.

I remember hearing his piano concerto back in the 1980s at Studio7 in the now-demolished New Broadcasting House in Oxford Road, Manchester. I believe it was subsequently recorded but I am unaware of further live performances.
