Just watched this on the i player, really enjoyed it. Didn't really get the same buzz on the radio. When you see all those committed faces in the choir you have to enjoy their efforts.

I think that you're absolutely right, Rjw - there is something about watching Musicians (Live or on the box) when they're obviously giving complete commitment to the Music that helps overcome (or, at least, subdue) any reservations we might have had listening "blind".

I can barely express how angry this performance made me - ugly, exaggerated phrasing and rushed tempi - for which I hold the conductor entirely responsible, and she's a singer! Bizarre. Tenor solo miscast... probably. It's all very well asking choruses to sing from memory, but if they don't know how to deliver the text as a soloist singing from memory would, it's a rather strange spectacle - bunnies in the headlights. That being said, the assembled forces - first class, with one reservation - were let down badly by the conductor. I'm glad some enjoyed it - it's a great work, but this left me scratching my head.
I can't wait for the next Tallis Scholars concert... from memory... (fake news).
