If you have the opportunity to listen again do turn up the volume, it is a breath-taking piece and I thought extraordinarily well caught by the BBC sound engineers.

This concert is also being shown on BBC4 on Friday evening."I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

The challenge is to persuade it to play the programme in a way that allows me to hear it.

For me, it falls into the bottom category, joined with Sir Andrew Davis's first recording and both of the Franz Welser-Möst recordings. The only advantage of those recordings is the standard of playing.
As they are all young musicians don't they at least deserve a hearing? Anyway, I will try to be at home next sunday so I can catch the repeat.

The only problem was that the poor little speakers in my telly were really struggling so I will listen to it again on Sunday so I can hear it through my big speakers
What was it that you didn't like?

Alpie, I noted you placed it in the bottom category but why did you not like it?

Very interesting to hear your further thoughts Alpie. I was in the hall last Sunday. Really enjoyed the first half; the Berlioz in particular was stunning. But the second half, in contrast just failed to move me. Totally underwhelmed by it. Too rushed certainly and such poor sound balance I left thinking I had wasted my time. I thought it must be due to the hall acoustics but listening at home tonight confirmed my first thoughts. In fact I was prepared to switch off before the end but persevered, but to little avail. I love this work but not via this performance.
