In the spirit of Radio 3’s popular In Tune Mixtape - joining together an eclectic range of classical and contemporary sounds - we present a live, late-night wind-down, exploring the fringes of Minimalism and meditative listening.

With radiant choral sounds and heavenly strings plus guest soloists, the Royal Albert Hall transforms into a vast ambient resonator.

Pieces by the godfathers of ‘Holy Minimalism', Arvo Pärt and Pēteris Vasks, emerge out of the sublime classicism of JS Bach and Schubert, in a Prom to calm the mind and nourish the soul.

Am I alone in being put off by the title?

Much better to have a list of the works being performed, rather than a Big Secret.

As opposed to a live, early-morning wind-bag, presumably...

Will these sorts of transhistoric, transgeneric mash-ups of easily digestible chunks still be being recycled to bring up the demographics in 200 years' time? Or will the idea of contemporary composition with contemoporary relevance have been rediscovered by then?

They truly think, or seem to, that listeners are NOT interested in pieces / composers / wherewithal etc , so much as just...sort of... well...feeling good.

Tenebrae the draw for me, can do no wrong. Travelling down for this and MB prom before this. Looking forward to wallowing in the unknown and being surprised. I’m a fan of Mixtape and Words and Music threads, revelling in the ‘big secrets’, though not many fans on this thread to be sure.

Is there evidence to support the claim that the In Tune Mixtape is "popular" -- and how is that defined?

This was a concentrated juxtaposed soundscape of music from 16 century to the present day. For those of us in the hall the subtle change of lighting gave a full audio visual experience. 12 Ensemble is a virtuosic group of string players who gave a sumptuous Schubert Death and the Maiden first movement which sounded as modern as the Arvo Part Fratres they also played. Tenebrae was consummate perfection as usual, from Esenwalds’ Stars with wine glasses, through Lobo’s polyphony to Tavener’s ‘The Lamb’. Martin James Bartlett in Bach and Chopin, astringent contrasts from Soumik Datta on sarod and Cormac Byrne on bodhran, segued between each other.
I enjoyed this kaleidoscope of music described in the programme as ‘Eclectic sounds in unlikely juxtapositions.’

I only chanced on the very end of this. I must give this a listen. If its a mixtape, it does have the advantage of shedding the chitchat from presenters until the end.
Would there be support for a "carefully curated" mixtape lasting the 3 hours up to 12 noon (in non E I F times) I wonder?

Thanks for the view from the hall, Jonfan. I was there for the earlier concert - BBCSSO/Brabbins, but should probably have stayed for this -- massive fan of (esp) Tenebrae. Will catch up later.
