An unforgettable Prom and one of the true greats in my 42 seasons of attendance. It was all that I expected and more.

Incredibly sad that this will be the last time I hear Haitink live in concert so it's very much the end of an era for me. There are are three of Haitink's Proms that stand out above all others for me and which have a very special place in my memory: An Elgar 1 in 1982 with the BBC SO and Mozart 35/Bruckner 9 and Wagner Siegfried Idyll/Shostakoch 8 with the Concertgebouw in 1983.

If recordings exist of those performances I'd love to hear them again.

Does anyone know if Friday's Lucerne concert is being broadcast live?

Not as far as I can see, having checked Swiss and German radio stations and elsewhere. The Festival's live streams page does not mention it.

Hello all, my first post! I've been a for3.org follower for some time now but never had the confidence to post before. I have however been inspired to finally put fingers to keyboard having also been present at this wonderful concert on Tuesday evening.

As has been said previously this is also very much the end of an era for me. I first became enthralled by classical music through the wonderful performances I encountered both through Radio 3 and on LP back in the early 1970s. Bernard Haitink's work has been absolutely irreplaceable for me, he and the musicians he has worked with, have consistently provided me at many, many concerts with some of the most memorable and pleasurable musical memories for which I will always be grateful.

With Bernard Haitink on the podium I have always felt that his performances seem so natural and I was listening to the music itself, and not more to the conductor, and that was once again how I responded to his performances of both the Beethoven and Bruckner 7 the other night. After a most enjoyable collaborative performance with Emmanuel Ax of Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto (and lovely Schubert encore by Ax) it was wonderful to see and hear Haitink draw such a magnificent performance of Bruckner 7 from the VPO, who seemed to play as though their lives depended on it. Bernard Haitink may be somewhat frail of body as might be expected at 90+, but he certainly retains all of his ability to deliver such memorable performances.

This is a concert which will definitely, in musical and emotional terms, be one which will stay with me, definitely unforgettable! On a lighter note I will also remember it for something which has never happened to me before at the RAH. In the bar before hand, I ordered 2 glasses of wine and happened to mention it was my wedding anniversary to the bar man - "in that case drinks are on the house!" I was told. Definitely a first and a very generous thought. I won't be as rude about the RAH in future!

So while I am very sad that I will not have the pleasure of seeing Bernard Haitink perform again, I wish both him and his wife much happiness in his retirement and thank him for all the pleasure he has brought to me and many others during his career. We are lucky to have so many recordings of his work available, and personally I have made numerous "off air" recordings over the years (purely for personal pleasure of course), and I will continue to return to them in years to come.

I may just be able to assist with the Shostakovich 8 at least. Inspired by attending this concert the other night I decided to trawl through my old "off air" recordings for anything Haitink related - I didn't catalogue things very well back then to be honest so its a case of checking the tape box and then sampling it to check. The box says "Shostakovich 8 / Concertgebouw / Haitink" and I have sampled it this morning and it is indeed Shostakovich 8. It definitely sounds like the RAH and its certainly a live recording from Radio 3 and I am certain it was recorded in the early 1980s, and it is immediately followed by a live recording of Beethoven's Egmont Overture which I have also written down as "Concertgebouw / Haitink". I don't suppose they played this as an encore did they at either 1983 concert you attended?

Anyway I do intend to transcribe it from its current analogue form to digital to preserve it - its currently FM stereo on reel to reel tape. I was somewhat amazed it still played at all, but from first sampling it really didn't sound too bad at all for its age. If you are interested I could make a copy available - its going to take a few days though since have just found out I don't have an appropriate cable to connect my tape deck and computer sound card, urgent order already placed with over large monopolistic supplier who guarantee next delivery but then don't!

Anyway back to trawling through the tapes to see what else turns up

Yes indeed, they played the Egmont Overture as an encore believe it or not! That was the concert given on Sept 5 1983 and I can certainly confirm the verdict of Alison's father. Unforgettable! The Bruckner 9 was given on Sept 3. This was the golden age of Haitink and the Concertgebouw and am glad I saw them on several occasions at that time in the very late 1970s/early 1980s.
