(If any dog goes by, (far, far below), the owls slowly move out of sight, within the tree...neither dog or walker any the wiser...)

...always captivated by the way they look at us though....

I find it amazing when another species looks right into our eyes. Next door's moggy does that on me: who knows what she sees in mine; or I in hers. I've been thinking a lot about this lately.

We had a particularly feisty wren in our garden this year which eyeballed me from the top of one of our fences for some time.
          I blinked first......

From hearing Daniel Kidane's Woke just now, my first impression was that it was kind of like throwing John Adams' Tromba lontana and Short Ride in a Fast Machine in a musical blender. Bit long for its material, but good for DK to get this premiere.

On balance, a pretty good first half, where I thought that the Elgar was the musical highlight (interesting to say that about the quietest piece on the program so far). JB did very well, where I thought that the Saint-Saens showed the very best of the 3 from her so far (again, something about the quietest number of the set). But the Verdi ran pretty close behind. (Plus, I think that JB winning Cardiff Singer of the World gives her UK street cred.)

PS: Nice feature on "The Musicians' Church" running now, with Petroc as audio tour guide. I visited St Sepulchre-without-Newgate 3 years ago on my last Proms visit.

                      Agreed

I am rather surprised to see the mezzo miked up. Katie Derham as dreadful as ever with three sycophants.

Thank you Jamie Barton for not putting Over The Rainbow through the vibrato mincer . Very nicely sung....

I assume that you mean this for 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' and 'I Got Rhythm'. This is actually normal for singers to be microphoned at the Last Night for popular songs in the 2nd half, vs. standard classical works that are meant to be sung w/o amplification. Because of the nature of these songs, it's easier for singers to deliver those lyrics better with a microphone, vs. having to project with sheer volume and trying to deliver the words in an expressive manner, especially with a faster-word-tempo song like the Gershwin. For their popular numbers in the LNOP second halves, Sarah Connolly, Joyce Di Donato, and Gerald Finley definitely used mikes.
