They've even hired another foreigner to conduct it.

Re. my addition of Willard White, with his Jamaican origins, his singing of Rule Britania did rather put me in mind of John Gay's sequel opera, Polly.

I shall be in a Hampshire church, listening to Janacek, Arvo Part, Elgar and a couple of others.

Renée Fleming, Juan Diego Flores....(not that I'll be watching, I give LNOTP a very wide berth). This year's is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, it says here.

And I was forgetting Angela Georgiou - I did tune in to hear her sing Ebben - ne andro lontana

The only problem about ending the 2019 Proms is that for the next three to six months we'll get endless repeats of Proms concerts on R3 from what, for me, has been a pretty iffy season altogether as the Beeb tries to be all things to all people and time after time fails to meet many of those people.

I think they tend to stuff these repeats into the Christmas fortnight ?

I always approach the Last Night of the Proms with a sinking heart but still end up watching it. Time was when the first half was a concert in its own right and you could go home/switch off happy at the interval. This year's programme seems even more bizarre than usual, a mish-mash of rather thin gruel that's not going to satisfy and the thought of the Hello Mum flag wavers in Proms in the Park makes the heart sink even further.

Yet still I watch it! It's one of those markers of the year, the end of summer and the countdown to Christmas. This year it's marking off my final few weeks towards retirement so my world will have changed somewhat by the time of the 2020 First Night.

New Zealand and Jamaica still have Her Majesty as Head of State... so it is arguably less odd for a Kiwi and a British Jamaican to be singing it, than an American.

Yes, indeed, have we not enough British bi-sexual singers who could do the gig?!

                        Damn poor show if not.

But another poster is quite right, we have had Anna Netrebko, Renée Fleming, JDF... and Gerald Finley who is Canadian (but he squeezes in under my new Head of State rule...)

Not really sure how the "Head of State Rule" works with Rule, Britannia!, Prommy - try telling an Australian that they're British.

Yes, I have similar feelings, yet hearing the whole Albert Hall singing the Elgar and Parry (both wonderful melodies) never fails to bring a lump in the throat and a tear to the eye, soppy old thing that i am!

Yes.... just so....apart from the retirement thing....(enjoy it, but please don't mention ******mas yet though! ...the cricket is still on and Stokes is trying to settle in...!)...

I'll start getting my roast poussin together as I watch Part Two on TV.... Rule Britannia might seem controversial now , but I like to hear the conductor's speech, and still like Land of Hope and Glory.....(not just because war-veteran Mum always did...)....
Not a great season - though a good few highlights - but I still like to say goodbye (and take the Proms Penguin down).

The End of Summer, poignant and sad....... slightly ameliorated by my return to regular country walks (I've found a pair of Tawny Owls in a vast, old oak tree no-one else knows about......if it's quiet and calm, they like to sit out in the late afternoon sun, watching me watching them in the way only owls do.....the Philosopher-Kings of the Natural World...)

September.... sun-glare slanting across the stubble and hay bales....
